Default Catalytic Converters: 96-00 civics are they all the same???

I've got a 97 Civic EX here that I need a catalytic converter. Does anyone know if the EX has a different cat than say an LX or other model? they all have the same cat?? I'm looking to go to the junk yard to maybe pick one up and I know they don't have any EX's out there. Thanks

I know the DX has the catlytic converter built into the exhaust manifold. Not sure about the other trim lines, but I though the CX and LX were this way also. I think the only other EK you can get a cat off of is going to be an EX.

Thanks a big negative. You cannot use one from a CX, LX, DX, or HX. I'm not sure about an SI, but those other 4 are different.

No, not the same at all... EX has a full header and cat. d16y7 and d16y5 have the cat integrated into the exhaust manifold. IIRC, the 96-98ex cats are different from the 99-00ex cats as well.

why not just get an aftermarket high flow cat. Take a look at the carsound/magnaflow cats. Cheaper than a new oem cat and I would probably try to avoid a used cat.

B/c Aftermarket cats are absolute ****.
They have a tendency to rot out in like 6 months.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but '96-'98 EX is D16Z6. DX, LX is D16Y8. I have a Non-VTEC integrated cat if you need it.

I have a 96 hx and I used an si cat it worked fine, but the hx, dx, and the lx cat is on the manifold, I did have to weld a different flange on though. An Si should work fine tough

of course though I have a header, which is why I had to weld a different flange, also, the Si cat is a little bigger so, depending on if you have a cat-back or not. you will have to get a piece of pipe expanded to go from the cat to your exhaust, most exhaust shops will do this for like 20 bucks though.

I just took the turbo kit off and just need a used cat to throw on for winter. If I could go w/o a cat I would. But if I was to put in a stright pipe with o2 sensor oviously in there too would this throw a code and if it does how do I avoid it/fix it ??

I had a Carsound cat for only 6 months and it rotted out on me. I even had my car dyno tuned with good a/f ratios, so it wasn't a rich or lean condition. There is anpother user on H-T, White Lightening, who had his pile of **** Carsouns rot out on him in under 6 months. I had to let him borrow my stock ITR cat inorder to pass emissions.

Another friend of mine has a Catco cat and it rotted out in 4 ******* months! His name is Jason and his user name here is Asimo something, but he rarely ever posts here.

Another friend of mine, Jeff, had a Random tech cat on a stock D15B7 and it lasted him less than 6 months before rotting out and having pieces of it tear his Tanabe G Power Medallion muffler apart.

If you cannot take my word for it then so be it, but aftermarket "high flow" cats SUCK. I have never heard of one lasting over a year.

I currently run the Carsound gutted.

Thanks for the info. I was planning on buying a carsound at some point down the road. I like to ask for facts because there are just too many rumors on the net and people making broad generalizations. Thanks again for the info.

Well it wasn't so much trying to prove who was "right" or "wrong" so much as it was a "buyer beware" sort of thing. I'd hate for anyone to waste the typical $175.00 installed on one of these piles of **** cats.

Also to answer the question:

Any 1996-2000 EX cat will work. The 99-00 Civic si might work too.

I'd also like to take this time to discourange anyone from posting "they're all the same" if you don't really know for sure.

I have had my catco converter for 3 years now and have had no problems with rust. And this is after 2 cars, and i had to modify it to go from my ef to my ej. I would buy another. Just my .02$

Don't think so man. Unless you are using a Teg downpipe or header the bolt patterns are different. (at least with the 95 cat I have off of a Teggy). It's a 3 bolt instead of a 2 bolt.
