Default Launching a b16

Ok i need some advice. im frustrated so here goes, i have a 89 crx dx with a b16 SIR. my mods are S1 tranny with clutchmasters stage 3 clutch an 8lb flywheel. CTR N1 crank pulley, skunk2 stage 1 cams, VAFC, dc header, 15 inch rota slipstreams with kuhmo 711s. Ok i have TRIED EVERYTHING. I launched from 1500 rpms all the way up to 5000. same thing happens i spin like a demon. i have tried tapping the clutch in, letting off on the gas a little, still i cant seem to hook up. every race i have lost has been because i spot the guy more than a car length cause i cant launch. I have not played with tire pressure yet, its at 30 psi. i put my vtec up to 5000 rpms, 5200rpms, nothing works. i have Ground control coilovers with tokicco blues. any suggestions? better tires? more practice? i know my car is not putting down the much power so i should be able to get it to hook up. im thinking i need better tires an struts, but let me know what you guys think. thanks

i think the "check driver" light is on and you may be out of blinker fluid hehe j/k you just need some more seat time, pratice makes perfect

HAVE YOU TRIED TIRE SIZE? I WOULD PUT SOME225 50 15 ON THERE ,AND TIRE COMPOUND IS A FACTOR. YOUR FLYWHEEL IS PREETY LIGHT ALSO. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED PRELOADING THE CLUTCH?IT WILL SEEM TO WORK FOR YOU.

you seriously should be able to launch your car exactly the way it is, without lowering tire pressure and all that stuff everyones talking about... i used to lauch anywhere from 4000 to 6000 rpms without a problem it really just takes practice, i hope your not just lauching and flooring it...

Just remember... your clutch and gas pedal aren't an on/off switch. It takes good footwork to get a good launch. Practice Practice Practice... I have over 40 timeslips on my 00 Civic, and I'm just now starting to get into the 2.2 60' with street tires, stock tire pressure.

your flywheel is a big factor in your motor its really hard to leave the hole with an 8lb flywheel with a quick reving motor but like i said preload the clutch before you leave the hole. its like this hold your e brake up, disengage the clutch until the moment to where you feel its just abount to grab and feel it out every car is different. bring your rpms up and when your ready diengage and drop the e brake its a lot of things to do all at once but its what alot of drag racers do if your not on the stall

i know i need to practice an im goingto continue to do so. what ive messed around with lately has been holding RPMs at 4000 an yes, i just let the clutch out all the way an stomp on the gas, then ill tap the clutch or let off on the gas a little till it catches, still doesnt always work. i know im not the best driver, thats why i am asking for better suggestions from you guys that prob know better. thanks for all the help. ill try preloading an se ewhat happens.

I seem to have the same problem that you have. And I have just about the same mods as you including the flywheel and clutch upgrade. You should definitely be able to hook up with those 205/50/15. I"m running on little baby 13" vx rims, and they used to spin like crazy when I first started launching but after practicing with them. Try this out I know it seems stupid but don't try to mash the gas soon as the clutch drops. I usually only launch at like 3500rpm and let them spin for a little, don't give it that much gas, then soon as they stop spinning mash the gas like a demon. It seems to work for me now. Oh yeah and don't just slide step the clutch when you let it out.

Same problem. I bought some BF drags, and I was perfectly fine.

I almost have the same setup as you and could only launch at 3k, but even then, I would spin all to hell.

After the BF Drags, I can launch on stock susp, minus kyb shocks, at 5-7k with little spin, esp when shifting.

Everyone said my driving sucked, but In fact, It was the grip. I would ease first, I still do, and tried everything, but it was the tires all the time.

yeah i know what you mean, everyone says im the worst driver which just isnt true. I mean, im not great , an i need to practice, but my other cars i could launch fine. i had a mildly build zc crx an a sohc EK that used to surprise people. but nothing has as much power as my current crx with the "b". i will try what people posted an ill get back to you.

Don't stomp the gas when you launch unless you're on slicks. You're just asking to spin that way. Rather, hold the gas at whatever your launch was at and then stomp on it when you feel the tires catch (or better, when they 'begin' to catch).

I have 1.5 years experience launching a b16 on true allseason street tires... I usually always pull mid-to-low 2.2s, and I'm usually within 0.05s of my last 60' time. 9.3s in the 1/8th mile.
