Default New to DC5's but not to honda-tech!

Well I was expecting my new Type S to come in on the 29th, but I got it yesterday morning . It is such an amazing car, a big change from my type r. But I love the smoothness, and how it is so driver friendly. I look forward to start learning as much as I did about my type r from the r forum, here with my new DC5. I snapped some digi. pics yesterday ill put them up asap.

Just one question I have, how long did you guys break in your k20a2's for? I know there are so many different opinions on break in periods. I always thought gentle acceleration and varying of rpm's for the first 1k but the manual says six hundred. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -Shawn

congrats on the new car! i currently have 1k miles on mine. And i don't believe everything the manual has to tell me. What does it say about your first oil change again?

Yeah, all of 2 posts... in the same forum... on the same day....... thats everything....

You dont have to baby it. Just avoid full throttle, and keep it under 4-5,000 rpm for the specified break-in period.

Are you aware the fact that not everyone comes in here all the time and post some smart comments? 2 posts is everything for me. And I'm just responding to the original topic, what are you doing?

So what's going to happen if i don't do that for exactly 600 miles? What about if i use non-Honda fluid? Just because they recommend you to do something in the manual doesn't necessary mean you must follow it or your car will stop working.

No, the motor wont blow up at 10,000 miles if you dont.

But at the same time, honda did put the R&D into the motors, so they know what they're doing. To get the *best* life, use, gas mileage, power, etc out of the motor, i'd follow their recommendations.

You sound just like a honda rep. Either follow the manual or your car won't last long. Is there an actual research that shows someone who drove hard on a car after the first 400 or 500 miles won't last as long as someone who did with 600 miles? If so, I'd like to see that.

In the end its up to you to choose what to do with the car.

I will tend to err on the side of longevity, because its usually cheaper that way.

Wow...we have an agreement finally.

There you go again, making assumptions. I believe my car will break sooner if i follow their advice and not to do my 1st oil change at ...is it 7k or 10k? I forgot...

To the original poster: I'm not saying you should not follow the 600 miles rule in the manual, but I drove mine easy for the first 1k.

Well, you are making an assumption also.

I figure the assumptions i make, costs me less $$ in the long run. I assume that OE parts are of better quality than aftermarket stuff for maintenance items (seals, plugs, filters, etc) so thats all i use. Costs more, maybe, but i've had hardly any problems with OE parts, and quite a few problems with aftermarket stuff (fit, finish, function, reliability, etc).

All I'm saying is just because I don't follow exactly everything it says in the manual doesn't necessary mean my engine won't last as long. We can argue our ***** off but in the end there's no proof on that. OEM parts do offer better quaility. I agree with you on that.

I would be curious to know what kind of additives honda is using in their break-in oil though.

There may be merit to keeping it in well past ring seating and such. Hondas motors are usually very, very good and their OE part quality is very good, i just tend to lemming along and trust what they say about stuff.

I was gentle on mine till 600, then I proceeded to beat the hell out of it. I don't care what Honda says about waiting till 10k to do an oil change, cause I burned a quart of oil in the first thousand miles. I'll stick with tradition and change every 3. Can't hurt anything.

I am kind of leary of the waiting till 10,000 miles as well, even if there are special additives, it seems like the oil will be worthless anyway after 4 or 5 K, so I wouldn't chance it with a brand new car.
