it can be done by drilling into the cargo mat and from what i've been told it wasn't that hard..
PM sjteg on this board..he did it when we were in high school but not sure if he still has it now or if he has any pics...he'll have more info on it

i already got the speakers, and they'll sound a lot better than the factory 6.5's...

sell the speakers and put the money towards a set of good components for the front
I've got a pair of alpine type R 6x9s in my closet because after getting components for the front, it sounds better when played just through the front (no rears at all)

I'm pretty sure I've seen this done before. As long as the depth of the speaker is the same, I don't see why this couldn't be done.

I agree sell all your speakers, and get a good set of components up front and add a sub for rear speaker(s) loud rear speakers are just going to screw up any chance of good imaging up front, unless you want to turn your seat around and drive backwards

i already have a sub, but i was thinking maybe forgetting about the rears and upgrade the front 6.5's instead.....sounds like ppl have had sucess this way
While I had my teg gutted I went into the back to see if I could get some 6x9's to fit where the stock 6.5's go.
Short answer: No, they won't fit.
Long answer: You can get them to fit but it's going to take some SERIOUS creativity. I gave up on it (and I used to do this sort of thing for a living) and just put the factory 6.5 brackets back in. In the long run, the slightly fuller sound of the 6x9 is not really worth it. All those guys telling you to put a nice set of speakers up front are smart. Listen to them.

what are you guys talking about.. i've done several custom rear 6x9 installs.. and im pushing clean fidelity w/ mine...
DUDE.. you can mount them on the deck! FORGET the panels under the quarter windows.. are you driving a hatch? or a 4 door? it'll work either way.. i have a hatch and i mounted mine on the removable deck lid.. it's fuggen easy..
(hatch only info)---TRACE out the 6x9 pattern w/ a black magic marker on the lid.. drill small holes following the lines of the 6x9 pattern.. when it's almost ready to fall out.. use a hand file gently and smooth out the pattern.. THEN go buy some plastic baffles from any shop and drop them in..(this will bring out the midrange) then drop the speaker in.. drill holes for the 4 screws (but use bolts).. and make some custom bolts w/ washers and and nut.. and tight from the underside.. cut small holes in the middle of the baffle for the speaker-wire.. and presto!!!.. I HAVE A 4 CHANNEL PUMPING THOSE &!`! AND A 6.5 COMPONENT SETUP IN THE FRONT... AND THE FIDELITY IS TIGHT!! DONT FORGET YOUR SOUNDDEADENING MATERIAL... AND AN STANDALONE EQUALIZER WORKS WONDERS!! TRUST ME ON THIS
`WHY SETTLE FOR ONE.. ENOUGH WATTS IN THE REAR WILL FILL THE WHOLE CAR!!.. AND THE HATCH BOUNCES THE SOUNDWAVES TO THE FRONT..
`GET THE COMPONENT SETUP FOR THE FRONT ALSO FOR KICK *** COMPLETE RANGE..
`ILL POST PICS LATER TOMORROW..
(MAKE SURE WHEN YOU TRACE & CUT OUT THE 6X9 PATTERN YOU DO IT BETWEEN THE 2 RIDGES LOCATED ON THE UNDERSIDE.. THE RIDGES KEEP THE DECK STIFF..& CUTTING INTO IT WILL MAKE THE DECK FLIMSY)

listen to medek, exactly what i said..although sjteg told me he took his off, wonder what happened with his removable deck lid now that it has 2 hugs holes in them...
i don't want to cut anything into the removable piece.....all i want to do is fit them in the original rear locations.....ugh
well.. your not going to fit any 6x9's into the the rear stock mounting points...
so to make a long story short.. if you want to achieve better sound.. just cut the panel like i described.. it's easy and looks nice if completed correctly.. Believe me.. i wanted to mount mine in the quarter-panel also at one point.. but after trial and error the deck lid was a better choice.. it was better for the staging and overall convience...
`now if your hell-bent on the quarter panel only.. i recomend the "infinity kappa - perfect 6.1 component set" (2 crossovers, 2 tweeters, and 2 heavy *** 6.5") and the only cutting of anything you'll have to do.. is to flush-mount the tweeters.. which is just an option
