Need a beater. What car would you get for 5 grand?
let me know guys. I was thinking some old civic si, but then maybe some kind of wagon? Any ideas.
I am not going to mod this car. I wouldnt' know where to start. I stay with modding my R.

How about one of those SR5 toyota trucks with the solid axle and 4WD I think from around '86? Those are supposed to be pretty tough and for $5K you could get a pretty nice kept one. Always good for hauling around stuff if you know what I mean.
i'm looking for somewhat of an economy car. maybe with something to carry things. a wagon? i don't want something with over 100k miles either. max 80k
I would try to get the cheapiest, somewhat reliable car I could get. 5000 is mod-money for the type r. I'm thinking you could get a true beater for under a grand.
Early 90s Civic AWD wagon...AWD for the winter is good. May be a little boxy but what the heck. Lots of space, AWD, good mileage, find one with good heat and there you go.

oh yeah, I guess I never really answered your question..
my choices:
88-89 Conquest TSi/Starion ESI or ESI-R
85 AE86 coupe or hatch (hatch bleh IMO)
88 CRX Si
92-95 Civic Si
87-89 MR2 NA (unless you really want that storage thing
)
91-94 Sentra SE-R
xx 240sx (all are underpowered, only suggesting them cause they are RWD at least)
any BOXY volvo like willard has! (lol)

hmm 5K is a good sum for a beater.. i would be spending like 500-700 bucks on a beat up crx.. but anyhow if you got 5K.. get a 89-91 S13.. and put an sr20 motor.. it will be stock and will beat your ITR any day lol
1970 Chevy El Camino... It's got all the space you need in the back.
1980 280ZX.
Any Toyota Pickup (they run forever).
AE86 is good.
Ford Econo Van, no side windows but it's huge as hell for hauling.

Could beat my r, but I do have toda pistons, spec b's, and a bunch of other goodies. My R is going under the knife and i didnt' like how i had to borrow other peoples cars when mine was down.
I was offered a 91 grand voyager for free that i think is looking more enticing. I might be a soccer mom for the next few weeks.
I want a car that i really cant' mod though cuz i do have the itch to do so. I am going to rebuild the whole engine, get the head flow matched with my b's and call it a night. i'm tired up putting endless dollars into my type R. I think i have put over 20 grand into my R and frankly i think it wasnt' smart. Maybe i should have put in only 10

yeah i know how it feels.. i still owe money on car parts.. now thats sad.. so far i say i dumped close to 15K in looks alone.. the only engine mod i have is "removed the stock air box" lol!!!
5G's and beater in the same sentence.... You can get a helluva car for 5 grand. I would get a older Nissan Maxima, they are bullet proof. A good freind had one while we were in HS and he beat the **** out of it everyday (neutral drops, ect) and it never broke, and ran perfectly up to the day he sold it with 165K on it!
My beater/commuter is an '86 Olds Delta Ninety-eight Broughm. Picked it up from my old roommates Dad for who is a mechanic, he dropped in a rebuilt 3.8L FI V6, runs perfect, pretty good gas mileage, and extremely comfortable for Road trips. It's loaded too, AC, power windows door locks, seats etc!
Paid a whopping $600 for it. Body, paint and interior are in excellent condition.

2 possibilities - a Subie wagon or an American V-8 full size pickup with tow package. The subie is great for a winter beater. Cheap reliable, holds a lot, goes anywhere. The pickup would be a great once you realize you'll need a tow vehicle to take your precious R to the track
You can get a whole hell of a lot more than a beater for $5k. I'd get a nice domestic car if I were you. They're cheap, abundant, easy to work on, and parts are cheap. A nice car to get for $5 grand would be a early 90's Z28 or T/A. You can get a mint one of those in that price range, and you'll have 14 second mullet grocery getting abilities to boot! Early 90's V8 F-body in mint condition! All the way!
i have an 89 lude si aws for my winter beater. paid 2900 for it. runs perfect, needs a little work but all in all, a sweet car. lot's o' room, good on gas as well.
for 5 grand?
my money is on a crx or civic si from '88-'91...
$2k should get you a decent si... Then another $2500 for a b20...
Done.
