Default Dash/Console lights going out...if its not a fuse what is it ???

I have a 98 civic EX, its a auto, the letters next to the shifter that say "R N D4 D2" etc. are out, they have never lit up since i bought the car, although all the dash and consol lights work fine. Also the light for the header control, the one that goes from blue to red, only turns on if i tap it a couple times with my finger. Is this common ? anyone got a easy fix? thanks.

My guess on the shifter light is a bad bulb or damaged wiring. The light on the temp slider could be a bulb with a loose connection, wire broken inside the insulation or a poor contact. It could even be a bulb with the filament broken that swings into contact when you tap it.

The bulb for the shifter is probably easy to get at under the cover. The temp one is probably a pain since everything on all cars to do with the heater requires a contortionist spider monkey to reach.
