Differences between msd 7al, digital 6 & 7????
Greetings everyone!! I am currently in the process of upgrading my ignition and have tried to figure out which ignition would be best for me. I have recieved numerous reccommendations for the msd 7al-2 and know throughout the years many hot rod cars used the msd 7al-2.
- However after analyzing the technical specs the msd 7al puts out between 105 - 115 mj per spark which is the same specs as the msd 6al. So what makes the msd 7al far superior than the 6al?
-The msd digital 6 puts out 135 mj per spark
- The msd digital 7 puts out 190 mj per spark
So unless there are other factors dictating the strength of an ignition box i cannot understand the differences. Please if someone understands or knows please enlighten me.
Thanks,
Eric

It depends on the use of your MSD unit..i.e. F.I. or N/A. We have a Digital 6 in our car and it seems to work fine...Has a Step rev for what you need it for like Burnout or Stage Limit. We use our for Staging purpose. On the Digital 7 i think it has 3 different stage rev. On the 7AL unit it does not have any stage rev at all...i looked at it myself in the Summit store in Sparks, NV. The 7al you have to buy a rev limiter to add to it while Digital 6 and 7 have built in units. Also if you need more of course look at the MSD site.
Thanks for the reply,
However i do not think you understand my question. I am concerned with purely the strength of the spark differences. I cannot understand how the 7al could be any stronger if the specs are the same as the 6al. So unless there is another measure besides milijoules per spark dictating strength then that is what i need help understanding.
In addition I have seen and had first hand experience with 6al and 7al on other vehicles and know the 7al has a much stronger spark than the 6al but would like to understand why.
Thanks again,
Eric
