which model to go with; kicker L5 or L7?
anyone here have kicker l5 or l7,,, im looking for 12'' and this online store sell it for 117 bucks.......www.thewholesalematrix.com ...........anyone have experience w/ them?
I've got the L7's and they hit like ****. I love them so much, even more that they don't require a ton of space.
If your not going to run a lot of power to them, then just get the L5's and save some money.

the reason why they sound bad is you need a custom box. with a regular box it sounds like ****. You need to get a custom box. Go to any audio store they will tell u. and get L7 if u have the money.

I have a 12" original L7 in the same type of box HONDA-2NR with a cheap Profile Clarus amp running 200 watts to it and it still pounds, a pretty good priced place i've seen is http://www.mmxpress.com & http://www.infinitecaraudio.com
The L7 might hit hard, but it sure as hell wasn't clean! Maybe the box was to blame, but it didn't leave that great of an impression on me. The L5 however, hit a lot faster, cleaner, and tighter to me.

The size of the box is what makes and breaks a great sounding system. Sealed boxes usually offer punchier and tigher bass all around. A small sealed will be punchy as hell whereas a larger sealed the sub will be able to go alot lower, though you'll be sacrificing some power handling.
Also, you can go with a vented/ported box which usually gives the subwoofer about 200% more throw and about 40% less excursion. These boxes are something you have to know how to build but offer some great options to what type of music you listen to and how you want it to sound.
Then theres 4th order bandpass...6th order bandpass...but Im not getting into those just yet =]
If you take an expensive sub like the JLW7 and throw it in a box that is not suited for it it'll sound like crap..now take a shitty subwoofer (think pyle..lanzar) and throw it in a box meant for it and it'll sound better than the JL (Probably not because of the quality of the product but its just an example)
So yes...boxes make the WORLD of difference in a subwoofer setup.

The only difference between the L5 and L7 is the basket, stamped steel and cast al respectively. Because cast basket costs more, they had to charge more and which justified a higher power handling spec. Or at least that's what the Kicker rep said at a training I went to.
The l5s are not bad, I hit 137.8 db's with a 10 in the Kicker vented box on, well way too much power! haha and I fried two of the 10's. However while they were running they pounded for the lower level solo's. After that I stepped up to two 15" L7's in a hatchback with 1400 watts, and well it rocked. The passenger side door won't open correctly now because of the pressure out on it rubbed a groove in the door latch mechanism. For the money, solobarics are

im happy with my 15" l7 yet space has begun to bother me since i have a set of golf clubs and school books stored back there also..might be thinking about a "downgrade" to a 12....willing to sell at a good price with box....
ive got (2) 12" L7's in a huge *** dual slotted box and it takes up my whole cargo space in my blazer... ive heard L7's in diff boxes and they dont hit as hard. from what ive heard u need mad space for these subs... in my box there are (2) 4"x14" slots.
They are great if you wanna be heard.. if you want great SQ, look elsewhere.. If its a sealed box, size doesnt matter much unless its TO small.. I think these subs require large sized boxes to sound best.. If you want a 12" sub for under 150 bucks check out Adire audio shiva, and Elemental Designs K12 subs..
By far some of the best subs for the money, both are great for SPL and SQ..
I have the shiva and im so impressed with it!
400 wrms to each is PLENTY.. im pushin 220w to my shiva and unless i wanted to compete, its more than enough..
