Exhaust Queston(JDM OEM+B-pipe+spoon N1)
Ok im starting to finish up my mods on my 97 R at the moment im not sure what to do,i have a JDM 4-1(OEM) header,i also just ordered a spoon N1(w\silencer)axel back from IPS Racing thank you Mike
.Now I am going to be running a Kenji OBD2-OBD1 harness W\Kenji chiped P28 so i will be OBD1, so im not wirried about throwing codes an emmisions arent a problem here in FL but i dont want the exhaust to be really loud.I was thinking of ordering a T1R B-pipe having a straight pipe made an calling it a day but how loud would that be with a silencer on the spoon?Or i was thinking T1R B-pipe with a cat instead of a straight pipe,if so which carsound cat would be needed(after search i came up with #94006 is that correct?)I guess what im getting at it i dont want this setup to be really loud.An im not sure how to go about getting it that way.
Any insight anyone has into this or prior experince would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance
steve

Eh. Loud and too loud is all relative.
I had a cat using that setup and it was fairly loud. Driven a car with a resonated test pipe and it was louder. I can't imagine how loud a non resonated test pipe would sound with a T1R/Spoon N1.
Ya kinda went the wrong way if you didn't want you car to be "too loud".

the silencer does make a difference when in.. its not as loud about half the loudness, but it doesnt sound good with it in and it losses power as well.. i would get a different b-pipe because mine is loud(t1r)
I have the spoon N1, and I think it is pretty loud!!! but it is not my daily drive, so I love the sound of it. I think the silencer is worthless (just my opinion) the sound is muffeled just a little. It was the worst ride I have had in my car too for the performance aspect, I really noticed a difference. As far as b-pipes, you could get the t1r or go custom, but I am sure both will make it a little louder. I would also run a cat as oppose to straight pipe, when I had a straight pipe on it seemed raspy.

I have a similar setup that you are describing ArmyGreenITR; although it's on a Civic Si.
JDM 4-1, Spoon Cat-Jack pipe (resonated), GReddy B-pipe and Spoon N1.
And it's my daily driver.
Yes it is loud...when egine is cold, when accelerating, when cruising, etc.
Hit VTEC and pray for a tunnel if you love that sound. I do, so it's not a problem. I have never put the silencer in. In fact it is brand new sitting in my tool chest.
So if you want something quiet, this ain't it.

Using a cat will keep the noise levels down considerably over using a test pipe.
Use 94066 or 94036. The 94006 doesn't have an oxygen sensor bung. The 94036 has one and the 94066 has two.

Then you'll need the 2-bolt cat flange from JDMHP.com for $24 and weld it on, or you can use a universal 2.5" ID 2-bolt flange with 4.75" bolt spacing and flare the end to mate to the donut gasket. The latter is how Dave of SMSP does it, and I like the working with that design better b/c the flange is floating, which makes installation and removal much easier over a fixed design.
The back of the cat gets a 3-bolt 2.5" ID flange.

Thanks
and Enjoy!
I'd go with a Cat over a test pipe. Eventhough you will be OBD1 the HP difference between the 2 will only be a couple of HP and IMO its not worth it due to the fact that it will have a raspy sound and its a hefty fine if your caught without a Cat on the car.
If you want the T1R and Cat LMK and I'll give you a good deal

Ooh...OBD-1...use the 94006 if you want then, but the other two will give you the option of going back to OBD-2 and keeping hte header on there.
Hey Mike @ IPS, how much longer is that deal going on for the Spoon N1? Any left for the DC2? Thanks
That's a kick *** deal, hopefully I find some money on the side of the road somewhere.

I totally agree with Mike. If you are concerned about loudness, definitely go with a high flow cat. I followed THK and BlueR/Mark to and from the Expo (800+ miles). IMO their Rs sounded awesome!! A little loud, but very, very deep and smooth. I think BlueR was/is running a resonated test pipe as opposed to THK. Nonetheless, I think the T1R b-pipe and Spoon N1 axleback and 2.5" high-flow cat is a great choice...

7 or 8 left for the DC2
Deal lasts as long as the stock does.
As far as the Cat I'd also agree that you should get one that is OBD2 so that if you sell the ECU you will not have any problems. Price dif between using a Cat without the Bung Vs one with it is negligable.

N1 = loud in most cases
The N1 axle back isn't really a "muffler" - it's more of a resonated pipe. Mufflers have baffles - that's what makes it quieter.
The exception to this would be a twin-loop design like the Mugen.

Yep. Don't get me wrong. I loved that setup. Not too loud from outside of the car (passed the sound limit at Lime Rock Park) and it didn't sound like another fart canned B series engine. I'll definitely miss the smaller muffler and the zoomy sounds it made.
It's just that it was a bit much for me since I am getting older. Those 3+ hour drives to the track is far more comfortable with a quieter exhaust and music playing in the background.

Damn Kyle, you're getting old.
