Why are the KYB Agx cheaper than the Tokico Illumina's? I can get the agx for $300 USD (I'm Canadian) and the Illumina's for $350. why are the agx $50 less expensive?

ps: that $50 matters to me, because im a poor student, and by the time the $ is converted into CAD, w/ shipping charges, duties etc.. makes a huge difference

 

what kind of springs/drop are you planning on running with the agx's?

I'd highly recommend a fairly simple mod to the fronts of either brand.
have the shock fork mounting position moved up about .75"
it'll drop your car that much without afecting travel.

 

ive driven on both and i have to say that the illumina's have a smoother feel. the agx's are good also, but both the prices you listed are pretty good. id say go for the tokico's. if the 50 is really that big of a deal though, then you will still be happy with the agx's

 

I have the tokiko's and my friend got the KYB's

both are good shocks if you ask me.

2.5" front drop
2.25" rear drop
the guy emailed me back saying $375 shipped. im getting interested heavily with the agx at this price. however ebay has always proven to show me something new

agx is cheaper cause it is of a lesser quality than illumina's. if you lower more than 1.5 inches the
AGX will go bad quick. illumina's on the other hand, you can lower atleast 2.2 inches without it goin
soft on you. **** 50 bucks more, i'll definently save up for illumina's.

both are good in their own right. if the 50 matters i think youll be ok.

i have kyb agx's with skunk 2 coilovers. 1.8 drop in front and 1.5 in back..and the ride is great and the car is level. I have the shocks at 4 and 4 in the back

 

im thinkin of doin the same thing but with tein s springs.....

I dont know enough about the skunk2 race springs really.

I'd say they can probly handle a 2.5" drop just fine though. especially normal springs.

I wouldnt really recommend the skunk2 coilovers, the springrate is a bit too high.

but I think you'd be ok.
I havent used tokicos, but personally I dont think i'd ever buy them.

one nice thing about the agx, is that when you adjust them, you are adjusting both compression AND rebound.
which is nice, because if you WANT it rock solid stiff(at full stiffness) thats what you'll get!

I have koni's now(just switched from agx) and they are only rebound adjustable.. and while they are definetely definetely top notch shock..
I really wish you could adjust the compression stroke.

IMO Tokicos suck.

The sets I've handled were hellafied soft and rode bouncy because they could not handle the rates they were paired with. It's all relative, but the rates I'm talking about were off the shelf Skunk2, etc.

My fiancee's 1992 Si hatchback rides on KYB GR-2s and old school Skunkworks coil-overs:



Rides really nice and has been like that for at least 2 years now. The ride is just now beginning to get *slightly* bouncy, but hell I can't ask for anything more since the struts are over 2 years old handling Skunkworks rates at that kind of a drop too.

Remember these pictured are the non adjustable GR-2/Silvers which are like $200.00 and less sporty than the KYB AGX versions.

I have also owned a set of AGXs on my old hatch with the same drop and they were awesome:



They certainly did not "go out quick" and I'd go on further to say that I think the AGX are better than the Illuminas. I've got a few pals with Illuminas and IMO they are not suited for rates as high as the AGX are. Sure the Illuminas can be "smooth" if they are paired with soft rates, but so can the AGXs.

KYB = very nice IMO.

 

Thanks for the nice write-up, tom. I was thinking about not getting the KYB shocks because people say they cant handle the bigger drops, but I think I will give them a try now.

 

more $$$ doesn't always mean better product.

I love my kyb agxs .... I have never had the illuminas, but IMO I would buy the kybs. I have them set up with ground controls (300/400) I've played around with the front settings, but I usually run them at 2/6 and I have my car at about a 1 1/2 to 2" drop. No complaints yet...and the ride is smooth, a little "Bunny Hoppin" but my local roads are pretty much to blame.

I also recommend doing a search especially in the archives to find some comments ppl have made about these setups and others opinions

if you didnt know i run skunk springs 450,350. on #3 it dampens them very well and the ride is smooth,
with very minimal bounce. for track or highway 9 i set them at 5 and its firm as hell, no bounce at all.
i literally beat my dampers and its holding very well. whatever experiance you've had or have with AGX
imo they are of lesser quality. not your typical damper if you want to lower beyond 1.5 inches.
if only $50 came between agx and illumina's i'll get illumians. $50 aint a thing. less than 1 days worth of work.

 

like he said though, hes a student. i am one too, and 50 dollars is a lot of money to spend and not get your moneys worth. that 50 could be saved up for something in the future like turbo/swap

you can get the agxs from coximport.com and they give you a discount if your a
h-t member(or at least they did).

 

i got my agx for 305 shipped off ebay(us$ though) and they kick ***.
