Oddyssey tranny.
So we all know the oddyssey tranny isn't known for toughness.. anyway we have an 02 [I think it's 02..] and it's got like 32 grand on it in miles.. and the tranny is being gayzor. Like it doesn't want to shift sometimes into 2nd or 3rd it just hangs in 'neutral' and revs.. so my parents took it to the dealer and they just called saying it's just tranny oil and a gasket.. I truly have not a clue as to what it might be so I'm just askin here.. and is it really gonna cost 70-80 dollars? I know tranny fluid is like 15-20 bucks.. but should we be paying this 80 dollars?

We've got an '00 Ody w/ 50K+ and are in about as extreme hot temps here during the summer with no prob's.
Seems to me with yours being an '00 w/ 30K shouldn't that fall under a warranty type of coverage?

get it fixed under warranty.
but, i've never heard of a tranny fluid change costing the same as an oil change. the trans. fluid in my integra costs about 60 bucks at the dealer. i'm sure the odyssey has a larger sump than an integra. so, 80 bucks for fluid and labor is about right. there is no reason to take the pan off, honda's don't have filters. but if they wanted to somehow inspect the trans. by taking the pan off, then a new gasket would be needed. sounds like the trans. has bad bands.

After the dealer replaced the trans. fluid, do the trans. shift the same, if trans.
shifting is abnormal take it back to the dealer, your trans. is under warranty for
8 years or 100k miles

easy there. that was my point, if there is no pan to drop, then there is no gasket to replace. but, i am curious about an auto not have bands. all the auto's i've ever dealt with had bands, but leave it to honda to have a better or different design. i tried looking on hondaautomotiveparts.com, but i am curious to know what they use in place of a band.

the odyssey along with cl/tl/mdx have a honda extended warranty with the transmission due to common 2/3 failure
call your dealer and tell them according to honda they have to repair/replace that trans.

The tranny has gears much like a manual tranny. There are shift solenoids that lock them in the proper gearset.

It looks like his tranny is still under factory warranty anyway because of the mileage and age of the vehicle. I would try approaching your dealer with this proposition stating that you don't believe the transmission fluid is the cause of the shifting problems, but that you'll happily pay for the fluid change if it corrects the problem. If it does not, then you don't expect to be charged for it. Very reasonable solution since it does not sound like a fluid issue IMO, but rather more serious transmission problems.
And fwiw, there was a press release from Honda extending the warranty on transmissions in Odyssey's, TL's, CL's, etc for 6yr/100K because of the swirl around their durability. So even if your's doesn't need replaced now, have faith you won't have to pay for it later when it does!

the only "gasket" I can think that they could be talking about is the crush washer that goes on the drain bolt that they take off the car. BTW genuine honda ATF is expensive stuff and is needed for proper operation of the honda automatic transmissions. 80 bucks sounds about right for a dealer job. Figure 1/2 or so hour labor at 30-40 bucks and then the rest to cover the price of the fluid.

Well the fluid did help, but it still acts up, just not as bad. 1st to second is wierd. It like goes into neutral, revs by itself, and then goes into gear.. only 1st/2nd though my parents are waiting for spring break or something to come around so they can afford to not have the van for a bit.

I don't think that's posible, they don't have bands.

I also have a 2002 Odyssey but I have 49k miles. All was OK until about 45k. I had the oil changed. The shifting started to get rough. My wife drive 10 miles to work so most of the miles are highway trips. The transmission started to not change gears between 2nd and 3rd. Every so often it would just let the engine rev. The dealer now says the trasmission needs to be channged for a $5200 cost. I told them they should pay even with the mulage. The transmission has had a very easy life over the 2 years we have had the car due to all the highway miles and no shifting. Dealer told me to call 800 number and talk to Honda. I did nad gave the rep all info he asked for. I have not gotten a call back as to what they will do.
I have seen on other sites that they "Honda" has extended the warrenty for the 1999-2001 Odyssey due to many bad transmissions. I think they still do with this 2002. I don't think the transsmission was upgraded to handle the 240 HP. I though that Honda had a good low defect reputation but I am wondering if they are good at hiding problems. does anyone else know about transmission problems?

That is the problem with htese trannys. They are **** and go without warning. Both the 4 speed and 5 speed automatics.
I know of one guy on his 5th tranny in his 3.2TL at 40,000 miles. And no he does not drive it hard. He is still on his original tires and brake pads.
Sorry, but Honda auto trannys are just pure junk!!!
