mounting fiberglass door skins
i have some fiberglass door skins and there is about a one inch lip on the front were the hinge mounts. what would be the best way to mount them, rivet a piece of sheet metal to that lip? is there any kind of adhesive that you can bond metal to fiberglass? thanks
you can use rivits, but you have to be very careful, or the fiberglass will crack. My suggestion is pre-drill all the holes in both sections, then start to rivet them, but if you can hear or feel the fiberglass giving away, cut the rivet stem so it doesnt compress all the way. just use wire cutters for that.
awesome, thanks for your help.. i just dont wanna mess these up.. kinda expensive and they took a while to get made/shipped.

yes i used it on my one peice front end, its made by Duramix and its a two part "tube" system. youll need a special caulk gun to apply it, just as strong as welding two peices of metal together.

is the section where the hings mounts perfectly flat? if so, why not bolt the hing to the door skin with a backing plate on the other side to offer support and keep the bolt from scarring or pressuring the glass.

Besides the specialized adhesives, you might want to take a look at the urethane 1 part adhesives used to install windshield, rear window and side window glass. I used some of it for the first time a month ago, and it is the baddest adhesive that I have crossed paths with. Very impressed with how darn hard it sticks to metal and glass. If you go this route, try a test first for compatability with the fiberglass.

Fiberglass or any form of lightweight pieces are not allowed on any part of the car except for the above mentioned (hood, fenders and deck lid). So no, fiberglass door skins are not allowed in SFWD.

that would work, or you can pre-drill and use small stainless steels allen head screws with lock nuts on the back (if you can get to the back) Looks nice, thats how I have all of my Lexan installed!!

Not completely true, Jim Skelly posted the other day that a sunroof plug is also allowed.
I don't mean to jack the thread but what about removing the door support bars in the doors for SFWD. They run the length of the door and are pretty thick, gotta be a couple pounds easy.

Here's a link to the thread. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=707856
yes I've seen the thread, however I would rather go by what the rule book says.
I just don't know why we have a rule book when rules are been removed and added without it being changed in the offical rule book. And trust me this isn't the first rule or item I'm reffering too. Many people here know what I'm talking about.

Anyone who sells doors should be able to sell you skins because of the way they are made. I know we have skins of nearly every Honda. Also road race companies usually offer only skins just be careful that it is not too far modified from the original since they are usually widened a bit. Not too much of a concern with doors but other parts it could be an issue.
