what's the sound system like in the S2K?
How does the factory setup sound and where are the speakers at? How many speakers are there? Is a CD player standard? Or is it just whatever was ordered with it?
Thanks for any info

Ok, 2000 and 2001 models had 2 speakers that maxed out at 15 Watts RMS(wimpy). You could never hear it with the top down on the highway. They were located in the doors near your feet. The '02 and '03 models got a new CD player, upgraded speakers, and the addition of 2 tweeters. In '04, new CD player, new speakers and tweeters, and added headrest speakers. The '02 stock system was still weak, and I have yet to hear an '04 system. The best place for S2000 audio stuff is lucidautomotive.com, he makes kits to add more speakers to the S, replacement speakers, and subwoofer solutions.

i read on a website that the '04s will have 4 speakers now... so maybe that will be better...

The Pre-'02 model is commonly referred to as way sub-par (stock). Lucid is getting harder and harder to find and personally I think he's WAY over priced. Adding rear speakers (IMO, this is hotly debated) adds at the very least enough volume so that you can now hear the stock system at high freeway speeds w/ the top down.

The '04's headrest speakers are tiny little units that are an option and Honda want's (reportedly) about $400, really not worth it for what they are (again, IMHO). There are a number of options for better sound. Do a search here and on http://www.s2ki.com it gets discussed to death.

00-01 stink stock, can't hear a thing above 35mph with the top down. The door speakers can be swapped and deck easily removed. Personally I went with the Q series mb quart's and stuck two 10 in kickers in the trunk just because I have a 1 hr drive each way to work some morning. Don't kid yourself the 02-03's are not much better in my opinion for quality sound, but then again you will be hard presssed to get quaility sound out of any convertable.
I dont' know too much about car audio.. but since i'd like to keep the factory CD player in there, is like wire up a small amp and then put in two nicer door speakers to make it sound a little better, with out adding any speakers.. I would just like to hear the radio up to 40 -45 with the top down.... does this seem reasonable?

i think that's been stated already.
try adding an amp to the existing stock speakers, it makes a world of a difference.

no sound system needed . . all needed is just the high revving beast doing its thing. that should be enough music to the ears . . IMO i never use the cd player or radio when i drive my cousins s2k every weekend
i was never into sound systems(getting subs, amps, new speakers, etc). the stock 03 stereo is good enough for me. im not sure how the 00-01 systems sound like , but i hear they were weaker.
