$400 oxygen sensor? $1200 clutch? Help!!
I just took my car in today to check out a CEL that's been on for a while now. The car ran perfectly so I never really worried about it. Now Honda tells me I need a $400 oxygen sensor and a $1200 clutch (mine makes a squeeking noise but works fine). My question is, canI get these items cheaper elsewhere. And can anyone recommend a stock-like aftermarket clutch? Thanks alot
PS- I live in Egg Harbor, NJ -any good shops around here?

This is a prime example of a dealer trying to rape your wallet.
You can get an Oxygen sensor for much less than $400. You can get a nice clutch for under $300 and install for probably $300. A nice stock-like performance clutch would be the Exedy Organic Sport clutch.

yeah honda is def. trying to rip you off. thats how they make money. just as an example, my last o2 sensor cost around 55 dollars. i would recommend the centerforce dual friction clutch it is about 300-350 dollars and i love it. great for daily driving and occasional racing. i agree it should also only cost 300-400 for installation.
This is a normal price list:
02 sensor from a car parts store = $60 to $120, Labor = near nothing.
OEM style Clutch = $90-120, labor $300-$600
Perfomance clutch = $300
reserface fly wheel = $30
You should not take your car to the dealer unless it's under warrenty IMO.

Wow this really helps alot. I just cancelled the order for the o2 sensor so I can save alot of money now. Can most places like firestone etc. do the work or do I need to go to a transmission place? Man i knew whan i called that the prices were waaay out of line.

doing your own clutch job is kind of hard. If you have the right tools and a hemls manual you can get it done in 3-4 days.
just buy a denso universal o2 sensor for $70.00 at your local auto store. thats what i did. because my o2 sensor was busted. damn shipping company.
First off Legend your post count is 666 right now
Doing a clutch shouldn't take more than a day unless you run into problems. Just pull the engine that took me about 2 hrs the first time I did it. From that point you shouldn't be more than another hour before the engine is ready to be put back in. Engine in took me about another 2 hrs
Plus 4 days because I broke a bolt...
O2 sensor is easier to change than changing your oil. Just need a wrench, jack and jack stands. Sometimes it can be on there pretty tight but it shouldn't be too much trouble.
You could do what I did when mine went bad. I was dead broke so I went the the junk yard and picked on off a civic with low miles just crashed for $0. Guy said it wasn't worth anything to him...

I say replace the clutch yourself. I had to replace the clutch and tranny. both went bad, clutch was slipping bad and 3rd gear went bad. took me about 6 hours cause I had to use hand tools. when replacing the 02, don't touch it directly. it's like replacing a light bulb, the oils from your hands will help burn it out prematurely.
Clutch Masters Stock Replacement Clutch - $129
CM LW Flywheel - $329
This is the best time to get the LWFW that you want because you already have the clutch and tranny out.

doing your own clutch...in a word..."Fun"...not the kind of fun like going to the strip club fun, but getting kicked in the nuts by the clown at the circus fun
if its squeaking but working fine, I'd blame the T/O bearing, and Exedy/Daikin OEM clutches are
in my book, and I second the vote for Denso O2 sensors, they are good shiz!
If you have done a clutch before, its all gravy, but either pay someone the first time, or have someone around who knows what they are doing!
just my .02....
HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL!

The O2 sensor is very expensive if you want the best of the bunch. The Honda part has traditionally been in the $200 range even with a discount. Our CRX one cost $150 wholesale from the dealer. The install should not cost you more than 1 hour of labor (~$70). If you have the special socket for an O2 sensor (I do) then do that one yourself-just keep your fingers off the end and be sure to use anti-seize on the threads only. Reset the ECU and all should be good. Yes you can use aftermarket parts. However, there have been many posts about the lower quality and life of them compared to factory ones.
Now to the clutch. My dealer quoted me over $250 for parts. True you can get a complete Exedy clutch, pressure plate and Throwout Bearing kit for about this price and have better than stock. As to the labor, my dealer says it takes the day or about 8 hours total. Do the math at ~70/hour and you are at $810 for the parts installed. BTW: Be prepared to replace the tranny output shaft case seals.
Happy holidays

Just buy a Clutchmasters stage 3 clutch and you will be very happy. I had one with 5k miles on it, but i sold it just recently. Too bad it was a b series anyway, lol. Just look around for the best price if you can't do the install yourself, and make sure the shop is reputable.
centerfoce is a good clutch for bolt ons too.
i have that right now still... 280whp and its just now giving out (4 years of hell).
a stock car will gain from a performace clutch.
also if u dont know what your doing dont even try the tranny. youll just end up pissing yourself off. i can do mine in about 3 hours out and back in again but i have a lift and air tools.
