LS 5th gear in b16 tranny
only looking into it right now...i'm on the freeway alot and gets annoying cruising at 4000rpms...besides i don't go into 5th gear when freeway racing....where can i get a LS fifth gear and how much do you think it costs? good excuse so i can get a 4.9 final drive and don't have to worry about cruising in vtec on the freeway

Not sure where you can find them, but I put a ls 5th in my jdm S1 tranny... a lot better on the gas and it's not like i shift to fifth when racing... 4th takes me to 120 or so at 8000. Go for it.. good luck!
You should still be able to buy these, probably around $300 or less.

You'll have to tear down the tranny, so you may want to go ahead and replace any worn synchros or upgrade the final drive (if you want) while you're at it.

I have an LS 5th ib my B16 tranny, as well as an ITR LSD. I believe the two 5th gears were about $160-$180 total from the local Acura dealer. I had a tranny shop do the whole install. The only "downside" is the gap between 4th and 5th. Its really not that big of a deal, but alot different when shifting from 1 to 2.
If you're an active "racer" and race up through 5th, I would advise GSR 5th. But I really dont know anybody like that, so LS should be good for you.
Whats the top speed with an LS 5th? Well I dont have enough horsepower to tell you, but around 130-135 on the speedo, it doesnt accelerate much more on a flat road. (GSR, I/H/E, 9lb flywheel)

its more than 130-135 more like 140-145 at least on the speedo. i am sure that its off but i have personally had mine up to 145 on the highway
In regards to the question as to how long it takes;
I just got done rebuilding my YS1 and I'd say that if the transmission is out of the car, it's an easy two day job. One day taking everything apart, cleaning and inspecting. You have to remove all the Hondabond and that can take a fair amount of time. The other day is casually putting it all back together.
By planning on two days, you are not in a rush. Doing a transmission is easy if you have the right frame of mind and take your time.
What is bogus about this is that if you have to get a part, it's never in stock at the dealer and will have to be ordered!!! Count on several days lost here.

so i have a jdm s1 tranny (LSD) and your saying i can just toss a LS 5th on there. whats the benefit of changing the final drive? can you just use the LS final drive?
i have a 300hp(400-500 later) turbo crx and boost hits at about 4800rpm 1 , 2 and 3 sometimes rip loose. no traction in 1 and 2. i top out at 130 and i shift too much. highway suck ***.
sooooo what should i go with s1 with LS 5th or just a LS tranny with Quaife? with that much hp the LS seems it would be better. iv also got a grind in 3rd (can i even get sycros for the jdm s1 i heard parts are hard to find with this tranny) so thats my situation assess my friends

what do you mean two 5th gears? two different trannies? I know what a finald drive does, but what does it look like? like basically, how does it fit in with the tranny? now that i know it isnt a 5th gear! haha. i think ill just stick with my Si 5th gear.
When changing a synchro, how far do you have to break it down? Because if its gonna be all the way then maybe ill go ahead and change out the 5th.

There are always 2 'halves' to any gear, the gear on the mainshaft and the gear on the countershaft. So, 2 physical gears for any given forward speed (1,2,3.. etc.). Take a peek at a repair manual transmission diagram and it will make more sense. Your gear ratio is the size/teeth difference between the two gears.

The final drive is the last reduction before the power is transmitted to the axles. If you think of a RWD vehicle, the final drive is (99% of the time, new Corvettes and such excluded) the gearing inside the rear differential. Since Honda FWD cars employ a transaxle, the final drive is housed inside the gearbox - it's comprised of the differential ring gear and the pinion gear on the end of the countershaft. Changing the final drive requires replacing the ring gear, countershaft, and possibly the differential, depending on application.
To change a synchro, you'll have to completely disassemble the transmission.
Hope that helped.

and the comments about availability.. at least for the older cable transmissions, as far as evreything I've seen, the parts are now discontinued, so you 'd have to find used ones...good luck!
I have a perfectly good 1990 cable LS trans(4.400 final drive) in the garage...but I need it for my CRX, unless I could find a B16 cable trans for cheap..

Have you actually counted the teeth on the ring gear and countershaft? I have seen differing specs on this, but I believe that all LS cable gearboxes had the 4.266 final drive. I haven't opened a 90-91 case, though, only the 92-93...
