I just saw tis new type of car alarm on the news. Its made by A'pex and its being sold in Japan now. How is it different? Its a silent alarm, but you get to know who your thief is.
How it works:
1. It comes with a small digital camera that you install in some discreet location in you car. Preferably in a location that it can get a good face shot of the perpretrator.
2. When someone enters yor car, the alarm photographs the perpretrator and sends the digital photograph via e-mail to any specified address (including cell phones) and lets the owner know that the car has been entered.
3. You can:
-remotely start and stop the engine via your cell phone by sending an encripted messege to the unit in your car.
-immoblize the car from your cell phone or PC via e-mail.
-know the exact location of your car, the speed its traveling, the direction it going, and basically the anything that the ECU sees.
4. Its $1200 for the unit plus $20 per month for the service....Japan only but I have a feeling that the States will see this unit soon.
Real Player Presentation in Japanese (no real demo ...just explanation):

holy crap thats high tech. I wonder how well the camera works and how "instant" the alerts are via email, phone, etc. For someone like me who is at my computer all damn day it might be worth it if the alerts are instantaneous, I could get pop ups on my screen. Very cool but the price sucks.

for what it does, the price isn't too bad...just think of what it would cost to get a quality car alarm with an immobilizer device etc..
And if you think about about what you're protecting, the $1200 you spen is pretty cheap.
I saw a better demo on Tv, and the photos are pretty good. They're b&w but it gets good quality. I'm sur you can retrofit a better quality color cam, but I wouldn't see why you'd want to.

Screw that, I want to hook up an xcam2 into the car and have live video feed via wireless signal. And then have the reviever in my room on my computer broadcasting to the internet in a secrete password protected location.
Thats a future project though.

I wonder how realistic that could be, setting up a wireless connection with a cam, and some sort of device to trigger the cam when an alarm is activated. The cam comes on, an alert is sent to you via phone, computer, etc, you log into your cam connection and see whats going on. If it doesnt look so good, you could disable the car remotely, or activate some kinda deterent like strobe lights in the drivers face, or smoke screens in the car, or on the more extreme side, have knives shoot up through the seat cushions into the theifs *** lol. That would be sick.

Now even JDM security is better! (it probobly already was.)
Do you guys even have a serious theft problem?
we are supposed to have something similar to it here, except for the photo taking part. It does come w/GPS tracking..it's similar to Onstar in many ways.
it does have a $100 annual fee though

wow, that's insane. it sounds great except for the day when some hacker gets the codes to your ride and remote starts it from his pc, while letting his friends gain access, then they post pictures of themselves flipping you off with your stolen car on your website...
other than that, it's awesome...

it would be great if it took 2 pics, one when the alarm is activated or entered, one affter you kill it so you can see the look on their face as your car coasts to a stop!

yeah, that would be a problem. i'd buy it if it came with it's own remote that had an LCD display, but the whole cell phone/pc thing doesn't seem very reliable to me.
