Default Comparing an s2000's vtec noise to a b16a2 - louder? Quieter?

I am interested in buying a honda. My friend has a civic hatchback with a b16a2. When vtec kicks in it is CRAZY loud, it turns people's heads on the highway. It's like the engine goes hummmmmmmmmmmmm-BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

What I would like to know, is does the vtec noise of the s2000 sound the same, louder, or quieter?

And if the vtec noise sounds quieter, would a different exhaust change that?

Lastly if any of you s2000 drivers have driven a hatch with a b16 engine, how does it compare in terms of power, low and high?

On a side note, how can I view topics older then december? When I click on 60 days or 365 days it still only goes back to december 1st. Is there an archive somewhere?

Is your friend's b16a2 hatch have a stock exhaust? I think that the b16a2 may either be the same or louder. You probably should just compare the two cars in real life. Take your friend's hatch down to the honda dealer and do a test drive.

Nope not a stock exhaust. But the sound i hear is definitely coming from the engine, someone else said it may be due to his intake.

No vtec at stock vtec point is louder then the f20c, except maybe the b18c5. (I have driven hatchs/delsols with every vtec bseries)

Your probably right... I have a GS-R also, and it they seemed kind of similar. But now both cars have aftermarket exhausts so they are both nice and loud.

I am glad to hear this! There are several used ones in my area hovering around low 22-25$k. I originally wanted a corvette because my brother has one. But even though the corvette and my friend's hatch are evenly matched, because of vtec, the hatch FEELS faster, and I like that rush. The corvette is just so linear and only has a punch off the line.

I'm sorry but the RSX-S is SUPER LOUD! I've been to a number of autoxs where I have to remove my stock air box cover to compete with the noise the RSX-S makes in VTEC. ANd my friend's 95 hatch with a 99SI engine and stock air box, modded a little, is very loud too.

All that noise is created by the overlap of intake and exhaust valves during VTEC. The F20C clearly has more overlap than most B series motors. For example, what would be louder? A GM 350 with a stock cam, or a GM 350 with a cam that barely idles the car? Proof is in the numbers friends. Obviously variables need to be taken into consideration. Stock air cleaners are a huge variable. On a 1999 Civic Si with a B-16, the air cleaner assembly is made by Siemens. Where as the F20C assembly is made by Hitachi. Exhaust too. The S2000 has an exhaust system that was designed by Mugen and produced by Sankei. The Si was designed by Honda and produced by Sankei. Just goes to show how much Honda relies on the reliability of other manufactures.

If we are talking stock cars here (motor, header, exhaust) then the B18C5 in the ITR is by far the loudest. Ive driven both the s2k and my brother's 99 SI, the SI being very quiet, and the s2k below when my car was stock.

you guys crack my **** up, who cares?

My brother had a Ford Granada "back in da day" that he cleanly hack-sawed the muffler off of, that was WAAAYYY louder than my F20c's VTEC crossover point ever has been.....maybe you need a Granada

umm...I...um, think you missed the point.

From the discussion above I'm thinking maybe someone needs to sell a pre-recorded INTAKE sound and have it play through a big loudspeaker under the hood, yeah, then you can guarantee you have the loudest sound coming from the FRONT of your car imaginable!!!

maybe I just don't get it.....

the reason why the hatch was louder than the s2000 was because more than likely it had performance cams like skunk, toda etc. The loudest of all vtec engagements has to be the NSX the ITR and S2K are pretty close to each other, every other falls after.

It's all about the mods you have. exhaust, cams etc...

I guarantee my VTEC is louder than my bro's s2000.

Why? Because his s2000 is bone stock and, well my car isn't.
