Default Custom painted Valve cover - how to ideas.

Wut up guys. I took this from a guys post about a local show off for cars and noticed this pic.

I just think cover is amazing and what you guys thought of how-to do this, ive painted my wheels gunmetal and tried testing Duplicolor metallic red (didnt turn out) .... but nothing like this.

Im just curious the process to do something like this ? I have a feeling is that it has to be smooth, like 2500+ grit smooth.

Also painting process, taped edges with spray paint ? but spray paint leads under tape and this has curves .....

I am just amazed at the quality of it and would love to see something similiar, especially an up close shot.

Awesome valve cover

I usually use Aircraft pain remover on the valve cover first to get it down to the aluminum. Then primer and use high temp. spray paint. So far so good

Nothing as complex as that though, I've only painted single color covers.

i think it has got to be. i don't think you can get the design that fine with a rattle can.

you might beable to do it in lairs. it almost looks like the first coat was white and then kept going up with different colors. or maybe he taped it off and made designs and cut them out one by one and then just hit it with paint.

As the other guy said, the aircraft remover and all that process, simply put is easy and I have done it numerous times, but that valve cover is insane.

I dont have an airbrush, hell i dont even know how they work.

Actually you can get that effect with puff cans if your good. My dads been painting cars for 25yrs now and he's pretty good with puff cans.

camo style? can't wait to see that, post some pics when you're done

Yeah, Noah hooked up that valve cover the night before the show. I'm not really sure if he used an airbrush or "puff" can, but seeing it in person, that valve cover was dope! it's painted all the way through to the spark plug holes(under the black cover)...very innovative, Noah

So have we determined if its spray paint with fat/thin heads or airbrushed?

Some people say one or the other. Someone should ask that guy, thats nuts.

How do airbrushes work? They require a tank right ? like for torque guns and shiznit.

IMO, 600 grit will make the paint stick the best... and that (valve cover) can be done with lots of time and lots of assorted rolls of painting tape, including sizes as small as 1/8" thick
