Does insurance cover H22 Accord?
sadly enough, i'm still co-signed with my mom on my accord and the insurance coverage. a 20 yr-old college student can't really afford to go on his own so that's how it is. got my h22 project coming out of the shop soon so just for the sake of arguement...
for those that have swapped the h22 into their accord, did you declare it w/ the insurance company? if so, did they increase your coverage or even state that they'd still cover you regardless of your h22 accord? just trying to protect my mom's name n credit since she insists that the accord be still covered and the rates stay in the same region if the h22 goes in.

Typically, I wouldn't report anything to my insurance company, but save the receipts. If you have an accident, pull out the receipt and it should be taken care of, but every insurance company is a little different.
i didn't want to report to the insurance co. either but my mom is really pissing me off by saying nonsense to me. she fears that if i am involved in an accident with my h22 accord, since i never declared that the accord got the h22 swap, the insurance co. will refuse to cover me for the accident once they take a look at my car after the accident for their investigation.
personally, i don't see any bearing the h22 has on the accord accident-wise but it's just after all the $$$ and time i spent on the accord and the h22, i'm not letting it go to waste.

i called my ins. company (AAA) to see if i could include the engine in coverage like say if the car was stolen so the car would be worth an extra 2000 for the engine, but they said they dont cover things like that, u can add coverage on things like stereo equipment and rims, but not for engine, so if they dont cover engine loss, then it shouldnt matter, after an engine swap u dont have to report anything differently with dmv, and even if u get a bar sticker ur car is still registered by the car, not engine, so engine dont matter IMO based on that
i inquired with my insurance co. and they said save receipts and an adjuster will evaluate the car based on the lower mileage on the motor and it's higher performance. i still don't think that will cover all the work though.best thing is to take the motor out if it gets wrecked.
the only way i think you may get close to 100% of your money is if your car is wrecked and it's not your fault. that way you go after the other persons insurance and you can after them personally in court.

hopefully you won't get into an accident that will require a new engine, but even your car needed a new engine chances are the ins co will just total out the car. anything 75% over the value of your car will total it out. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I work in a claim center and insurance reps don't know the first thing about cars. there is no way the would know how to tell what type of engine you have in your car. they wouldn't even check. you'd get more money for a stock accord than an accord with an H22...in the eyes of the insurance company so if they total the car don't say anything.
When I talked to my insurance company, they said that if I put a new motor in, it doesn't really matter, they still look at the car the same. I thought that if you mod your engine, they look at that as a higher liability, but they really just look at worth of the vehicle. Like everyone else said, keep the reciepts.....you're like flynt
my mom just fears that not declaring/notifying the insurance co. that i may/have swapped the h22 into the accord gives them a backdoor regarding me involved in an an accident where it gives them more of a reason/right to not cover my car and damages inflicted. get what i'm saying? i've been trying to get in touch with my insurance rep. but damn automated menus.
Just keep pressing zero and soon enough you will get a real human being. And I would go about it as asking not saying your putting in a new engine in. I would say, "If I put a different engine in my car but its still same size, will you guys cover it? If so do you have something in writing?" And also insurance only goes up when you add a turbo or supercharger....that is if you tell them. It shouldn't matter that your swapping into a h22 granted its a ton more power but they still look at it as a 4cylinder. Plus its not like its a 2door 2 seater sports car with a v-10. Honda with a 4banger=cheap insurance.
The only problem is that if you blow your motor let say accidently and you can proved it or play innocent, the insurance company will not replace your H22A! Plus if your car is stolen, you will incurred a loss. That's the chance we take to go fast. Speed cost $$. If it's totaled, I'd take out the H22A and put the stock motor back in. This is just another angle to look at. Hope I didn't worry you too much.
when i spoke with the ppl here, i told them i had several grand invested in the car, i had two options..
1 - if something happens, i have a xxx limit on parts i can prove
2 - when i am done, i take it to an aprasiers here, cost me 75 bucks and he will apraise at its xx value and list its features. that would then put it in a special/extoic class and payments woug go up out the ***
let me tell you this, if you trash the car.. they will give you xxx for the car.. not to include anything youve done... my brother totalled his and they cleared it and said it wouldnt be worth it.. what is worth $$ to you is worthless to them.
Secondly, when he got the first invoice in, they quoted the f22 replacement more then the h22.. h22's arent that expensive anymore,
if they charged you 20 more a month, you would of bought that motor over 3 times in the next two to three years.. every day your car loses value and when you mod the car you only make that faster..
if you want to keep it at its worth and get all you can.. dont touch it!

my 89 hatchback got stolen. i had over 15k worth of parts on that car. then engine alone was worth 5 grand with hust the parts on it. insurance only paid me $4500 for the whole thing. that was also after i showed them invoices that totalled over $12,000. like ibdave said, that's the chance we take to go fast.
don't worry, insurance company can't screw you for the motor. when i was getting insurance for my prelude, she asked me what type it was. S, SI or SI Vtec. then i told her i had a jdm h22 and she said it didn't matter. she said most people don't know what trim model their car is anyways. and she said that if i had it under S and had a h22 in it, it would be appraised as an SI Vtec, and i still get the cheaper rate. it's all about knowing and hanging out with you insurance person.

i don't know how it works down in the states, but i've learned a costly lesson up here in ontario.
i had a 94 coupe that was stolen and never recovered. i had a rebuilt bottom end, suspension and brake upgrades, interior/exterior work, custom stereo. nothing crazy but i had about 10 grand into the car, plus the cost of the car itself. i got 11,000 from the insurance co. i had pictures and recipts for everything. didn't make any difference.
This time around they know about every mod i'm doing to my 93 sedan. when i start going over acceptable limits (motor swap and turbo) i have to get teh car appraised and then they adjust my insurance to compensate. it also prevents the police from harrasing me should i be pulled over.
just for a reference, an extra $1000 in stereo equipement (2500 total) cost an extra 30 per year. so even after the car is done it may cost me an 45 a month or whatever, but at least it's covered.

well...for one thing, if you're buying the h22 complete swap for 2k or over, i think you're getting ripped. secondly, i bought my jdm h22 sleeved block and head for dirt cheap. all i need is the tranny so i would say i'm well over 80% complete + the motor is semi built and with that in mind, i'm still uner the 2k cost ceiling.
who knows if its just $20 more a month...could be different on a case by case basis. the point i'm trying to get across is if the h22 goes in and i don't declare it, does it give the insurance company a back door that i don't know about to **** me over regarding coverage if i'm involved in an accident? i know insurance rates go up n etc. but my main n only concern is coverage in an accident. your car loses value from the day you bought it and sadly you either live with it or sell it.

either way,, declare it and pay more.. you still wont get everything its worth.. or dont declare it and deal. cause you wont get everything its worth.. i can speak for everyone, but my brothers was in that same case.. my ex g/f worked for allstate her and she told me a million times as she went through a few things.. they never got theri full value.. pretty much do what it takes to make your mom happy if your on his insurance..
plus if you get in a wreck and you got the full swap and w/e for dirt cheap, its not much of a lost then
