Might be buying a newer GS-R. Need help before purchase.
Hi. I have been thinking of turbo'ing my GS-R, but with the higher mileage and a lot of other problems I've been having, I though, why not just sell my teg and buying a little newer GS-R with less mileage and less problems. So, I found a one-owner stock GS-R for sale with 66,000 miles on it. Before I buy it, I think I will bring it to a honda or acura dealership to do a 70 or whatever point inspection and see what servicing, etc. it may need. Since the only reason I am buying this lower-mileage teg is so I feel safer about boosting it, I was wondering:
-What test is more important to ensure it can handle boost? Compression or leakdown? Also, what should I look for in the test results that would tell me the engine is strong enough to handle a turbo?
I think this will be a good decision. Even though I'd have to spend like another $1,500 after I sold my car, I would know that the one I would be buying hasn't really been beat on (because older driver, and only driven about 7,400 miles a year). Plus it's all stock, so I can start fresh.
Thanks much
Tim

Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not really shopping around, I have one in Mass. that I'm looking at Tue. or Wed. Just wondering if I do a compression test on it, what the results will mean.
I think good numbers for a compression test were 205. As long as all the numbers are close to each other you should be good. I was told a compression test is a better test to use to determine the shape of a motor; personally I do not know

Both are important. Compression and leakdown show different things.
A leakdown test will help you source the problem for low compression.
Compression should be +/-20psi for all 4 cylinders.
Why don't you save the money from buying a new car and build a motor for turbo?
Just a suggestion.
EDIT: .......you only plan on spending 1,500 to boost your car?

OK. I plan on turbo'ing the car. That's one of the reasons I want to buy this one because the engine is younger (mileage wise) and one-owner, so I think it is probably stronger than my current GSR engine (in a sense that it wasn't beaten on). I will still be turbo'ing the car, and spend the money to build the engine if necessary.
getting another car isnt going to guarantee that it will be better. For perspective, lots of new cars have a mess of problems right out of the show room. If your luck is down, you might actually have the same problems on the newer teg.
What sorts of problems are you having that you can't seem to repair?

Problems with my current 'teg, that make me somewhat interested in one w/ less owners and less miles include:
-puddle (exaggerated) on carpet when it rains hard (ie: crack in firewall?)
-has 111,500 miles (would like to have car for 5+ years)
-actual door is splitting away from door itself (would need welding)
-last owner told me that he was told the engine is strong, but again, i would prefer to turbo with less mileage
-I am the 4th or 5th owner
I will have the compression tested on my current teg and the teg i am looking to buy. If my current teg has better results, I will keep it, but if the one I am looking to buy has better compression or similiar compression results, I may buy it.
Thanks for the help
Tim
PS - Plus the other teg has black leather int. - yummy

Hey I live in Groton, but anyways I own a 95 GSR with 170K on it!! 111K is NOTHING.. LOL. You wanna switch?? just joking. I hear ya with the whole newer and fewer miles. Thats my situation. I'm thinkin about selling my teg and getting a newer car with less worries about keeping it maintained. Which isnt cheap and i dont wanna end up spending more money to fix the car then what its worth. Im lookin into an RSX type-s. Trust me I do have faith in the Honda, I think there the best cars, its just the $$ required for older/used cars...
Yeh. I know my current GS-R is probably only at half-life with 111,000 miles, with plans of boost and lots of other things that it is in need of lately, I would rather start with a GS-R with less mileage, and again, only one middle-aged owner, so chances are it was not beaten on. I'm thinking of buying the GS-R before I sell mine, that way I can put the short shifter that I already have in the teg I am looking to get. I don't think a short shifter will help it sell any better or for anymore $ anyway. Plus I'm def gonna swap the stereos. I think I will get compression tested on both engines and go from there.
