they are because they are a standalone system... and work independantly . what did you get with the blackjax system..
you should have:
1. the siren
2. the valet code button.
3. a little black box which is the brain
4. and some wires
5. i think thats should be it.... correct me if im missing something...
they have been doing different things. but to make sure call dei/clifford to make sure...... but the one i have works independantly with any alarm system.

where can i purchase this unit for a relatively inexpensive price? also, if you have any experience with this unit, how effective is it?

it is really effective. i have it on one of my cars that already had an alarm system just no carjack feature. no extra remotes to have , its activated all the time when you park you car. you de activate it when you want to start the car. so there no way you can forget its on because you wont be able to start the car.... i got the system for about 100 bucks then had it installed by a friend. its not too hard to install, but my friends the alarm guru......if you dont have an alarm system get an alarm that already has it integrated into the brain like the clifford intelliguard 750 and above alarms. but if you already have an alarm system just no anticar jack, then this is perfect system for you.....any alarm place can get it for you..
What Cxshoe has said is correct. (i am also a blackjax owner)
The pricing for these thing range a lot. I had a friend that worked at clifford and got it for $100 then payed a clifford certified shop to install it ($120). It is very reliable, but at times it can get annoying (have to enter code everytime a door is opened).
Also, i think the new Blackjax's (Blackjax 4) are all stand alone. So i think it should work with anything.
just wanted to add how awesome blackjax is:
One time at a stop light, some stunna comes up to me and tells me to get out of my car. I calmly stepped out of the car, i did not panic because in the back of my mind i was thinking "thank god i got blackjax." To make the story short:
-Thief gets in car
-says "stupid mother fcker"
-blackjax goes off
-walk about 5 minutes to my car i listened for my sirens
-car was abandoned. Stupid thief
-got in car, entered code and was on my way.
man, Cali is getting ghetto.
Blackjax saved my car
