Default Spun Bearing on H23a

What are the symptoms of spun bearings and how can they occur? What does it actually mean?. Also I was wondering if the H23a motors had rev limiters becasue a couple of weeks ago, I missed 4th and went into 2nd. I hit like 7500-8000 rpm. What might happen with something like this? Thanks.

It'll sound like someones tapping on the bottom of your engine with a hammer. Then it will sound like someone is beating on the bottom of your engine with a hammer... then it will sound like your engine doesn't run anymore. lol.

Get your high tech listening tool (a screwdriver) put it up to your ear and place it on various places on your block and see if you can hear anything. chances are if you spun a bearing you would hear it already pretty loud.

The h23 does have a rev limiter... but it won't work in your case. You actually forced the motor to rev that high... by shifting into the wrong gear...nothing your rev limiter can do about that.

If you did it a couple weeks ago... and don't notice anything wrong... then you prob got lucky and you're safe.

If you missed a gear and over-revved, you more than likely would have floated the valves before spinning a bearing; but if it were a bearing, you would hear a slight knocking coming from your bottom end.

Like said before, you would have heard it soon after the incident.

Well, what is the rev limiter at? I saw the tach go to like 7500, but I immediately let go of the pedal. Why would my case make me go past the rev limiter?

What are the symtoms of floated valves. I am getting a valve adjustment as part of maintence in a couple of days anyways, so would I find out then if i did float valves. This knocking sound you speak of, should i be hearing this at all revvs? Can I hear it from the inside of the car?

if you bent vavles your car will idle like *** and stall a lot and in the low end seem to be really slow.

A spun bearing will be a knockiung sound the gets even louder as you accelerate.

Momentum, my friend. When you do the money-shift...moment of the car causes it to go past the limiter. NOTHING can help you when you are going that fast and put it in the worng gear.

I believe you have a misconception of what the revlimiter is. The limiter is when you are accelerating up to the redline and either the fuel, or the ignition is cut by the computer so that you can not accelerate (using the gas pedal) past a certain RPM. But when you misshifted you put a put a physical connection from the moving car through your tranny and forced the crank to spin past what the computer would normally let you go to. In fact I am sure that your limiter did exactly what it was supposed to do. It did cut the fuel/ignition since you were past 6700 RPM, but there is nothing that the computer can do about your inputs to the transmission. Hope that answers your question.

That does answer my question. Thanks for clarifying the rev limiter issue pirate. So basically what ur all saying is that it would be obvious if i f'd something up in the engine and it would run like crap? The engine is a little rougher, but im not sure it is so only a after the incident. I think i need a valve adjustment + tune up anyway. This engine is the original USDM H23 motor that came with the car. It only has 58k miles on it and its 4WS.

How fast were you going when you dropped it into 3rd?? Do you rev the car up when you are going from 5th to 3rd gear on the highway??
