GM Synchromesh
I did a search and found it interesting the amount of people using the GM Synchromesh as tranny fluid. I was hoping thinking that now time has passed, are people still using this? Im just curious because I have alot of the same problems as people posting in those threads and Im thinking about switching over. Can I get a definit part number from someone and how much Ill need to buy?
Also, with a tranny fluid change, can some give me the cliff notes on what I should do and/or look out for? I currently have Honda MTF.
Thanks a ton, you guys have been very helpful.

Im still using it, and have not grinded 1st or 3rd gear since switching to it from MTF.
I dont have the part numbers in front of me, but they can be found on the board. If you go to a dealer, you cant miss it and they should know what you are looking for (since supposedly all GM vehicles now use the stuff). Its a simple black round container(regular synchromesh), and the square container (similar to quarts of oil containers) is the friction modified stuff. I paid $9 a quart for the regular, you can find it cheaper online but you gotta pay shipping so it usually evens out. You dont need the friction modified, but you can use it if you want and some people say its even better than the regular.

I remember reading some posts a few months back where it was concluded that using the regular syncromesh is no better than regular Honda MTF. The Friction modified is a different story. I'll be switching over come spring.

This man speaks from experience, I don't. Either way, each product is good in it's own respect and I'll be looking foward to clearing up some grinding issues of my own

LOL! Define how it's "ten times better".
Seriously, just asking. Got some numbers?

How in hell can you grind first gear?
How in hell can you grind first gear?
I got 3 bottles of it at my house waiting to be put into my car.. my tranny makes funny squeak sounds [mini grinds? I dunno probably later on] from 2nd to 3rd at higher than 4k rpms.. hopefully gonna get that done along with my 5th gear.. I shall report!
Thats actually one of the problems I am having, but a simple search answered my question. Hopefully switching over to the Synchromesh will help me out
. If Im at a stop, first is a little difficult to get into. Now I see that its a common problem among R owners, and Ive been told its a given to experience the problem if swapped into a civic. BUT, if Im rolling to a stop, and I want to put the car into 1st gear, there is a horrible griding noise. I dont have the grinding if Im at a very slow roll/almost stopped. Plus the car seems to shift a little more difficult than my old d-series trans. The clutch only has 13K on it and its not a problem that happens EVERY time, so Im pretty confident Im fine there.
Only other thing I was thinking was I have the infamous "whine" which from searching on here, alot of R owners experience, though some say it ends up to be a throwout bearing.
I figured I switch fluids, and see what that does. If its better than what I have its worth a shot.

First gear grindage occurs when downshifting from 5th to 1st at 80mph. JK seriously though I used to get grinds when shifting from 2nd to 1st when coming to a stop. Hasnt happened since the synchromesh change. And thats with a garbage clutch I have that doesnt help matters any.
Like I said, its just my .02 and saved me a lot of cash (for now) until I get take the tranny apart and fix whatever needs to be fixed (guessing its the synchros).

Good rule of thumb for the street, don't put your car into first until you come to a complete stop. Trying to jam your car into gear while rolling could be causing the problem in the first place.
synchromesh is the ****!!!! i was not so sure about it but i work for hendrick dodge and he has a honda and gm store right here. i can get it at discount so if it didnt work i could just switch back and be out like $10. so i switched and have decided to not go back to honda mtf....all of my grinds are gone, tranny shifts soooooo smooth and i can shift into 1st now when the car is in motion (i have an eg coupe w/ b18c). this is probly the best thing chevy has ever made!!!!! btw i am running non friction modified

i have heel-toed everything i've owned (countless hondas, some vw's, a couple of comestics and my toyota tacoma...) into first and never had a tranny problems.

Was this the friction modified, or just the regular syncromesh. I've never heard anyone have any complaints about the GM Syncromesh (Friction Mod.)

where's everyone in this forum? i did some searching, and after reading this: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=641177&page=3
i think i will stick with Honda MTF, GM Synchromesh will cause faster wear at cost of smoother shifts.
