the d16y7 is non vtec and the d16y8 has vtec. you can tell by looking for the vtec solenoid on the head near the distributor. You can also tell by looking at the engine code on the block. The y7 also has a much shittier transmission than the y8. The gears are much longer in the y7. The y8 cam in 96-00 ex civics and the y7 came in the 96-00 cx's, and dx's. Another vtec motor from those years is d16y5, but it has vtec-e which doesn't make it faster, but more economical.

B16 is DOHC, and has more power in the topend. Also 160hp vs. 127hp stock.

D18 y8 has same tourqe as b16 thats what counts in race! Maybe not good on top end but a cam can change that.

Your right about them having the same amount of torque, but wrong about it being all that matters in the race. If you take two identically weighed cars, but a B16a in one and and a D16y8 with a cam in the other, the B16 equipped car will win.
