Default High idle problems....

Hey guys, I did a search, and I got a whole lot of stuff, but mostly everything related to cars with mods, etc....

My ITR is completley stock. It was in storage for 3 months, and I just started it up, if I recall everything was fine, and I drove it about 800 miles total today. When i got back home, at the light, after running awhile, my idle would be at 2,000, and MAYBE slowly drop. If I turned the car off and back on, it would be normal. Keep in mind, this is FULLY warmed up!

I've read about coolant issues, but that would probably happen also at start up.

Maybe its the sensor on the bottom of the throttle body? How can I tell? Someone said to go check codes in the post before, but its frickin 4 am, and I wanted to see what you guys think so in the morning I can work on this..

IACV or FITV? If it was this, wouldn't it happen right away also, instead of driving for hours upon hours?

edit* I also got a few mpg less than i usually do... But not dramatically..

does the throttle cable stick or anything? my cable used to get stuck sometimes and it would never fully come back down to normal idle range. I replaced the cable and its fine.

I find that the R does not really like being in the cold... what temperatures are you seeing in Chicago? wow... 800 miles... and you stored it in the fall until the winter?

But I do find that "hard driving" in the cold seems to make the engine idle higher especially over longer distances on the highway... you probably read some of my posts before regarding this. It is only after highway driving that this occurs right? If so, you MIGHT be okay...

From what you said, I gather the CEL does not come on. Though this may be a precursor to that, as I seem to have had behaviour like this for a about a week before I started getting a weird idle problem with the stock computer. Though I don't have a stock intake or throttle body. But I figured it was probably a coincidence with the sudden tempurature drop.

But I'm not sure if the ICV would be at fault since you stored it for 3 months and I'm assuming nothing happened before you stored it and no changes were made during. This would probably be more for something like my "crazy idle" post a while ago, where the idle is affected in all situations...

But as I said, I had similar things happen to me before the CEL scenario came up.

try what RTW did, throttle cable is fairly cheap and not a bad set back if it actually wasn't that

my R has never idled that high

i had not driven the car for about two weeks and after driving it on the highway for about 20 miles i came to a stop and the car idled at 1800rpm. i thought it was high but then i realized that it was cold as ballz outside and maybe the engine idled that high to keep itself warm. you prob. dont have any issues but maybe your temp gauge is busted causing you to idle a little to high.

i also just got the R serviced and told them about the 'problem' and they said there was nothing wrong and the 0204 was in fine condition

once in a while after a couple-hundred-miles trip, get off the hwy at the first light when i come to a stop, it would rev to like 1500rpm and then go down to the next light it will become normal again!!!!
mine is a 98 also stock with about 100k miles.
i notice the same thing on my R too but i never wanna bother posting it here cuz everything seems to be fine to me.

But i was really concerned because it didn't go down after driving about 10 min of city...

my fever went away today so i checked deflection on throttle cable... seemed way more than 1/2 inch, almost an inch i'd say... But then after driving it today idle seemed fine..

You mentioned that you have less mpg's than usual while driving. The high idle could be caused by a vacuum leak, (I dont know how it would be intermittent causing idle to change at times and sometimes not) and the computer will try to fix this vacuum leak by adding fuel to the engine until the input to the ecm from the o2 sensor sees an acceptable value.

well, for now its giving me no problems (knock on wood). So I'm going to pretend it didn't happen, and hope it doesn't happen again.

on a side note, seat of the pants dyno tells me car is faster than normal. cold air? winter tires break lose past 6k! I LOVE it.

Agree on posible vacuum leak. Check anything on the vacuum system that might have been messed with before storage. You can wiggle the hose connections when it is idling high to check which one it is. Check for hoses that are 'hardened' or cracked, tight bends, and all the press on connections. If you find a suspect spot, smother it in a little Vaseline to check it.

I've had this on a couple of different cars. Turned out to be the brake booster diaphram, or the vacuum hose off the booster.

How many miles does your R have? Have you ever had a problem with, or changed, the brake master cylinder?
