painting headers????
bought some DC headers fr a coworker earlier and its a little scratched up and i was wondering if i painted it w/ engine enamel high temp **** if it will comw off afte a while???? thanks......
my friend did his stock JDM header.. on his h22a. first he sand blasted the hell out of it.. then painted it with the high temp engine paint by dupi color.. he then let it sit for like 2 months or so (waiting for the motor to be finished).. the paint held up great after a few months of running it.. even on nitrous and several runs at the track. I think the key was the sand blasting and 2 month cure time.. cuz he just did his new turbo mainfold, sand blasted, painted.. but he only let it cure/dry for 2 days we started it up last night and within 5 minutes the paint was peeling off..
Actually you could shorten the cure time by running the engine for a few seconds, on and off...the heat will cook the paint....but if you leave it running too long it will burn.
I doubt high temp enamels will hold up tho....they are usually reated to 500F
Plus the metal expansion will probably crack the paint

Sandblast and then use a ceramic-based high temp paint. I believe Dupli-color makes it. Otherwise just send it to your local ceramic-coat place and have them do it.
i had a custom header i made a while back powdercoated. there is a hightemperature flat black powdercoating out there, its pretty tough. i've had my header on for about 9 months now, and NONE of it has came off. the color turned a sweet grey color on the primaries where the header gets really hot. i've daily driven (somewhat, cruising/highway trips), and its good...have about 9000 miles on the finish. it's gonna get taken off cause i'm redesigning the header, but i might have it done again. the only problem is the finish stays on but you can scratch it off easier than you would expect after it turns grey. the header hasnt rusted a bit though, not even one little speck, thats what i wanted . i havent had much luck with "hightemp" paint...it ususally all sucks.

I know duplicolor makes a 1500 degree engine paint, in several colors too. My friend used it on his heat sheild before, and it held up fine.
Isnt black BBQ paint rated to 2000 degrees? It sounds like you're going for a matte black finish anyways, and that stuff was designed to take the heat. You can get it at Home Depot or the like.
