How hard is it to change a timing belt of an Accord 2.3L 1999?
I did a tb change on a Mazda a few years ago and it was relatively easy.
The dealer wants 400$CAD for this. My car has 70000+ miles and they say that
it should have been done at 60000 miles, although the owner's manual says
105000 miles for rgular conditions. Is there a procedure detailed online
somewhere? Any case of broken timing belt FOR THIS SPECIFIC engine? TIA.

an interference engine, if i recall correctly is where there isn't too much clearence between the cam cover and the cam shafts and valves and all that stuff. so if the timing belt breaks, all that stuff is going to slam into the cam cover, because there isn't a lot of clearence.
anyone correct me if i'm wrong.

Then I stand corrected....never even heard of it, at least not as a type of engine....guess I do learn something new everyday.
Well, not quite. An interference engine means the valves open far enough that they'd hit the piston IF the piston were at TDC. Most Hondas are interference.
So when the timing belt breaks, the piston can come up & hit an open valve. That's not usually a good thing.

thanks for the info...i knew it had something to do with pistons and valves hitting something...i guess hitting each other

Changing the timing belt is pretty easy. no worse than any other motor i guess. If you've done other cars you should be able to handle this one. just get the helms manual and it will walk you right through it
getting the crank pulley bolt off is a complete bitch though. even air tools are no gaurantee of success. thats really the only difficult part.
if the belt breaks, you will most likely bend a valve.
heres an online how2 for the f22. the f23 is essentially the same thing but you don't need to do the balance shaft oil seal thing.
