Questions about stock muffler
Hi,
My girlfriend is buying a 2002 Civic Si, but you have to scream in the car to hear each other talking at highway speeds due to the crappy muffler that was installed. She's not interested in racing, so flow (more flow than stock, anyway) isn't something she's really concerned with. She would like to have a stock muffler reinstalled on the car, but I wanted to make sure she's getting the proper one. So now for the question...
Is the stock Si muffler the same as the EX or other Civic trim lines or one of the Integra trim lines, or is it unique to the Si?
I'm just afraid that if she walks into a muffler shop and requests a stock type muffler, they may install something that will hurt performance and gas mileage. If it's something special, I'll need to get it from the dealer.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds...

The OEM exhaust is gonna be expensive, figure around $600 cat-back or $300 axle back. Cheapest route may be a silencer for what I assume is a fart can that was installed on the Si, after that, a quiet street performance muffler. A silencer in daily driving gives you back the low RPM torque and unless you're always going WOT the performance is fine. When you hit the track, just pop it out.
Thanks for the tips, guys. The person we purchased the car from has a dealer's license and some affiliation with with a local honda dealer. He can have the stock parts reinstalled for about a 15% discount on parts and probably free labor. I was figuring that having it done without a discount, as mister x confirmed, would be between $300 and $400 for axle back. Hopefully it would cost us somewhat less (btw, having the original muffler replaced as cheap as possible if we requested was a condition we bought the car on).
Does anyone have a recommendation for an aftermarket muffler that would perform similar to stock for about the same price or less? Quietness, build quality, and at-least-stock performance are the first concerns in this case. (I know this probably pains many of you, but this one will definitely never see the track.) blk02EP has suggested I try to purchase a used stock one, but due to the fact that I can get a deal on a new one, I'll hold off on that for now.
Thanks again for any advice...

uh just a muffler is what I'm looking for... just one that's maybe a bit cheaper and doesn't clog the exhaust up like a banana. We're not really looking for a throaty growl, just something that's quiet, cheap, reliable, and otherwise unnoticable.

Just buy someones's used stock rear section. If the Base RSX rear section and EP3's rear section are the same, there are always exhaust going for really cheap over at clubrsx. Good luck.
