car wont start need help fast!
hey guys I went to start my car to leave my friends house and it isnt trying to turn over. I hear the main relay click and some weird kinda hiss noise from under the engine and it isnt starting. I checked my ECU which normally throws a 21 (have a rpm activated switch running my VTEC) and it isnt flashing at all. I tried resetting the ECU a few times to no avail. I believe the ECU is the problem, maybe a wire grounded out and fried it. My heat, radio and lights all worked fine so it isnt a problem with the battery or the alternator or ground. I could possibly be the starter though because it isnt trying to turn over and it occasionally grinds. please help...
if the starter isnt turning over, then yeah, its likely the starter. the trick is to smack, real hard, a couple times, with someone else trying to start the car and it sometimes works. it basically jogs the brushes to turn over just enough to get it started.

ok I was trying to start it again a minute ago and noticed that the ecu (or something in the visinity)is clicking like a relay when I try to start the car. and the motor is kinda making a very slight whining noise when I try to start it. If I keep the key turned the whining dies out after about two seconds though. Also when I turn the key to crank it, the turn signals (in the cluster) and climate control lights light up slightly. I tried tapping it with a hammer (dont have a rubber mallet accessible) but my intake pipe is in the way. I will have to move it in order to hit the starter any harder. Any more help would greatly be appreciated!
also if it is the starter that is bad could I drift the car down hill and release the clutch while drifting downhill that would bypass the starter right?

Hate to say it man, but if your ECU won't wink at you, it's more then likely no good.
When you say "it isn't flashing at all" do you mean that the led is illuminated and solid(not flashing), if so, that is a code 0 which indicates a faulty ECU..

yeah that will work.
i dunno what the clicking is. seat belts click when you disconnect the battery power, but youre just turning the ignition on and off. you sure the whirring isnt the fuel pump from behind the seats?

If teh starter is bad you can try rolling it down a hil and it will start without the assitance of the starter. This probably soudns stupid but try having one of your friends or someone try and give your battery a boost. I stopped at a store a few weeks ago and i went to start my car and there wasnt anything, so i figured it was my starter. i tryed beating on it and still no fire. So i had some old lady give me a boost and it started up and come to find out the power wire to my alternator was loose and wasnt getting a good connection so it wasnt charging my battery properly. Just a suggestion, good luck
nah the sound is definitely coming from in front of me. I am scared I will get my car out on da street and it wont be the starter n I will try to release the clutch n then be stuck on a busy street. Im gonna try to get my freind to crank it while I hit the starter now. My bro said to check the power n ground wires going into the starter but I dont know where they are. Is the starter just the black cylinder or is the goldish cylinder kinda connected to it also part of the starter?

no the light wasnt lighting up at all. it is starting to now. I can see a flash (10) when I turn and hold the ignition, but the ECu loses power after about two seconds and no more led.

i question whether your battery is indeed charged enough. what you think are bright headlights still may not have enough juice in the battery to turn the engine over.
btw, every honda starter ive seen is green.

there is a small wire that plugs onto the side of the starter... i believe it is a ground... correct me if im wrong... those things love to come loose... if its not connected it wont even attempt to turn over but everything else will work properly

isn't the ground the wire with the rubber cover over the conector? there are only 2 wires right? the one with the plastic conector and the one that you put the bolt through(ground wire)

Before you go buy a new one, since theyre like 100+, crack it open and clean the contacts real good, wire brush and contact cleaner are good. Slap it in and see what happens, you could save yourself some $.
thanks for the tip, but it has been grinding for a few months, i think it probably needs replacing it.
does anyone know what starter I need for my 1st gen b16? are all b series starters the same?

ok, so I changed my starter back in january. and it still grinded.
My friend said it means that my flywheel is missing teeth and I need to replace it, so Im getting and ACT streetlite 12lb chromoly flywheel and an ACT organic street clutch.
Anyway, we ended up finding out that the problem was actually a loose tranny ground, which we tightened.
So in the last couple of days my car has been stalling at red lights and having a hard time starting (ie the starter only tries to kick over for 1 sec then pauses)
finally today I was driving on a busy street and my car stalled gently at a red. I tried to turn it over and it wouldnt . so I had to push it off of the busy road. I looked at the tranny ground again and saw that it was extremely corroded and probably needed to be changed. so I went to the local audio stores and got the neccesary parts to switch to a 4 gauge ground. I spent $50 on a ground terminal that is too big so the car still wont start (at least I think that is why).
I am going to go to the local junkyard in the next couple of days and get a ground.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
BTW, if u have a first gen b16 and need to replace ur starter you have to use a delsol vtec starter. the 2nd gen and 3rd gen integras dont fit and niether does the si.

ok I really need help. My car is stuck in a flat parking lot. so I cant push it then clutch start it. OI already tried quite a few times.
I have a question though there how many wires hooked up to the starter?
because right now I have two hooked up. one that is bolted onto a post, which I am assuming is the positive, and then one little (what looks like 18 gauge wire) hooked up with a spade connector. Right under that wire is a rubber thingy, it looks like ther shouldbe a wire hooked up to it, because I dont know what else it would be there for. Is that the ground? if so that means mine fell off and I dont know where the wire went.
Someone please help!!!
