Default OT: Shipping wheels?

Sorry if this is not in the correct forum, but if it is a problem mods feel free to move it.

Anyone know the most efficient way to ship wheels/tires. Also if anyone knows a particular average cost anywhere. I've been trying to do some estimates on the UPS, FedEx, and USPS calculators and its coming to be a lot of $$, well over $100. Just seeing if this was normal.
TIA

Depends mostly on weight. Don't send tires unless absolutely necessary, because they'll double the cost. Just put each individual wheel in a box with a towel on the top and bottom to cushion it a little.

Use greyhound express. It's a lot cheaper than UPS, Fed EX

I sent for wheels to Atlanta from chicago via fed ex ground and I believe the total was $25-$30. I boxed up two rims together, so I had two boxes total. I shop everything Fed Ex Ground and have never really felt that the shipping costs were ridiculous.

I did the same thing, they package and ship it out for you around $15-$25 per wheel

that's insane.. i've shipped 4 wheels cross country before and it only cost like $35.. get 2 boxes that 2 wheels will fit in.. box it yourself..

mailboxes, etc. and the UPS store charge fees on top of UPS rates.. go directly to UPS or use Staples to ship..

Here are the things to think about when shipping:

1. COST. I have found that FedEx Ground (called FedEx Home Delivery when sending to a residence) is less expensive than UPS Ground. The post office is an option too, but usually makes sense only for small items (under 1-2 pounds). Mail box type shipping places (including those owned by UPS, that were formerly called Mail Boxes USA) are ALWAYS more expensive than going to a FedEx office or a UPS customer counter. Air services are more expensive but you usually use them when you're in a hurry, not when you want to save.

You can buy boxes cheaper at Office Max, Staples, and Office Depot than at the shipping places.

2. CONVENIENCE. FedEx has offices all over the place. UPS customer counters are few and far between. (Greyhound is even fewer.) There are several FedEx offices within 2 miles of my house, and UPS is ~15 miles away.

3. DELIVERY. Greyhound doesn't deliver to residential addresses.

You can shop around for shipping rates as well as box prices etc on the internet; all these places have websites that will provide this information. Links:

FedEx
UPS
Post Office
Greyhound

I just sent a set of wheels to someone in WA state...

I used two boxes, 24x24x16 that I got from Office Depot...about $5 each...each tire was placed into a heavy duty garbage back to prevent scratches and put tons of packing peanuts in there...weighed about 45 lbs per box w/ 16" spoon wheels w/ tires...

buyer said they arrived in perfect condition
