question regarding tranny
ok guys.. at idle when i let the clutch out.. i can hear a VERY SLIGHTLY audible whine.. i figure its the throwout bearing.. or the tranny is low on fluid...well i havent got around to checking the fluid yet.. becasue the car is not with me at the moment.. and ( i hate saying this.. i sound like a complete newb) i dont know where the plug is to check the fluid. and do honda trannys use ATf.. or lightweight motor oil.. or gear oil ( doubtful) or what??
so can someone tell me where the plug is on the tranny to check the fluid.. and what type of fluid is best?
fyi.. i have a 91 ef hatch with a ZC swap and a DX tranny
thanks

There is a plug (17mm) near the passenger side axle, when you take it out, the level should be even with the bottom of the hole, so a little might come out. The trans takes Honda MTF or 10w30 motor oil where Honda MTF is not available.

Make sure the car is on level ground too, not on 2 front jackstands in your driveway.

If the sound goes away when you press down on the clutch pedal, your tranny mainshaft bearing is going out. Does the sound happen when your foot if on the clutch or off?
My 90 civic makes noises when i dont have the clutch pushed in. I was wondering if it the main shaft or some kinda of input shaft what am i looking at to get fixed. How much is the part. thanks
Sounds like mainshaft. The part itself is cheap...it's the labor of removing/installing the tranny, cracking open the transmission/disassembling, reassembling.
It's better to do as much of a rebuild as you can afford while it's apart because you only want to do this once. Bearings/seals definite and synchros if you can afford it.
But more often then not, it's cheaper to replace the whole tranny. A decent DX tranny can be found for around $100. A better accelerating Si will set you back $200. A ZC tranny can also be used but will require new axles...these can be found for $150 but shipping from Cali will add to the cost.
And then there's hybrid transmissions...I'll stop at the commercial plug, but if you're replacing your tranny, it's cheaper then you think and a niicce bump in performance.

It doesn't matter what year motor...it matters what year transmission....
If you get a 88 tranny, you'll need a 88 clutch/flywheel set.
If you get a 89-91 tranny, you get a 90-91 clutch/flywheel

wow i AM retarded.....yeah.. i shoulda known that... the transmission its self doesnt contact the engine ( as far as power transfer is concerned anyway) in that case.. is there anyway i can date my tranny? i'd like to reuse my cluth/PP that i have now-Clayton
