Default polishing hx wheels.

i think it was here on h-t, but i recall reading a thread where someone polished a set of civic hx wheels and made them quite shiny. i picked up a set (track wheels) recently that were painted red. after i remove the paint, i'm looking to re-paint them black, but polish the lip. so my questions are:

1. would acetone be strong enough to remove the paint? the wheels were spray painted...
2. what could i use to polish the wheels (lip) to make them/it shine?

thanks

To get the paint off use "Aircraft Remover". It comes in an spray can and you can get it at any pepboys or similar stores. I used it on my valve cover and it works great.

sorry for all the pics you 56k-ers, but i felt i'd document my progress and show everyone how the wheels came out.

1: all 4 wheels w/ 1st coat of aircraft remover.

2: close up of a wheel w/ 1st coat.

3: all 4 wheels after 1st coat was removed w/ pressure washer (2 hrs. later).

4: close up of a wheel after 1st coat removal.

5: all 4 wheels after 2nd coat of aircraft remover sprayed on.

6: close up of a wheel after 2nd coat sprayed on.

7: 1 wheel dried up after 2nd coat removed, 2 wheels w/ 2nd coat still on.

8: 1 wheel w/ lip taped up, getting sprayed (engine enamel flat black).

9: the lip still needs to be polished, but you get the idea.

10: 3 wheels still needed some lip-work, so i had to buy some aircraft remover in the can. these will be sitting over night...

damn, the wheels in black w/ a polished lip look AMAZING. and to think, these were only going to be my track wheels.

yea, painting the wheels black and polishing the lip makes it all so much more time consuming, but it's WELL worth it IMO. they look really good.

In my experience it is easier to do the lip after painting, because masking a curve is very difficult.

that's for damn sure. masking that curve was a BITCH.

and to answer everyone's questions: yes i used a pressure washer, they're civic HX wheels (14''), and they weigh 9-10lbs (so i've heard).

i finished painting all 4 today...2 of the lips didn't get polished though, stangely enough. i'll have to take more pics to show you guys exactly what i mean. either way, i'm going to mount the tires tomorrow (hopefully) and i'll take pics of the wheels on my car.
