Default Engine Replacement

My 93' Accord Engine is starting to burn oil. On colder mornings when i start the car a puff of blue smoke comes out until the engine warms up. I was wondering if it would be worth my time and money to go to a junkyard and buy another equivalent engine and rebuild it or buy another rebuilt engine? And does the home mechanic have the tools to rebuild an engine? I've never done it, is it hard? Oh and buying another car is a last resort.

Thanks

dude i think ur valve seals are burned out. when the enginei cold the seals are open so they let oil run the the cilinder burn champer. so it i burns the oil in the morning till it warms up and the seals close. then it might be the piston rings. if the last one then buy another engine or if u have another car try to bild the the one that u got in there. but u will need tools man. just go to a flee marked and try to get all the tools u need for cheap. make sure u get matric no inch. lol its about 200 to change the valve seals and about 1500 for the piston rings if u take to a mecanic. just try to measure the preasure and that is going to tell u if is the seals or the rings. last resour buy a new head engine for $600

sounds like valve seals/guides to me too. so there is no need to change the whole engine. you've basicaly got a couple options

replace the head with a lower mileage used one
replace the head with a rebuilt one
rebuild the head you have
check your oil regularly and fill as needed

obviously that last one is the cheapest and easiest, and really, in a lot of ways is the best one.

If you are going to to remove and install the head yourself, then you really only need a set of metric sockets and wrenches, several different size drive wratchets, a pair of pliers or a hose clamp remover tool, a breaker bar, and a torque wrench. if you want to rebuild the head you will need a valve spring compressor and probably some other tool(s) I'm forgetting

you also HAVE TO GET the helms manual for your car. Working on your engine without the Helms, is like figuring out open heart surgury as you go along.

a used head is around $100 - $200, plus a new headgasket, intake manifold gasket, and new head bolts. that adds about $100. take the middle price for a used head and you are at $250 in parts --- and that will buy a shitload of oil.

Thanks Everyone. I'm getting my CV Joints changed and my oil at the same time. I'll have them use synthetic since its supposedly better for higher mileage engines. I'll also have them check the compression. I basically need this car to last me another 4 years, through college or until I can afford a newer one. I'm going to purchase the Honda Service Manual. And I'll check into getting another head or just use mine till it konks out on me.

Oh the torque wrench... is that used to measure the tightness of the the bolts??

if you're using synthetic, you're wasting money.

id say if u gonna spend over $500 in parts alone fixing ur already old engine...save that $500 and invest in a new(used) engine which isnt gonna cost that much more and is gonna be more reliable....jus be careful shopping for a engine...swap in a a sohc vtec f22... ...i see some on ebay for like $450-800 but dunno if they really are what they say...i think thas a better way to go

Thats what I'd really like to do is swap a sohc f22b. Really dont know a good way to get them though.. anyone know how to get a hold of an f22b besides the junkyard? I'd rather stay away from ebay. Anyone have one to sell?

ive got one if anyone wants to trade me for an H22......yea....i wish.....try checking w/ shops that do swaps....they often take the old engine as part of the payment, and then usually sell the old motor and ship it out.....if u time it right, u might be able to get a nice Vtec f22 for a very good price
