Default CRX guru's--Come here please

Ok here's my problem. I run my 88CRX Si to about 3k and it
stuters and also back fires. Now this doesn't happen
all the time. Just once in a while. Also my engine light
turns on every so ofter and flashes code 15 and 17, but
turns off when I restart my car.
Now I have got the tach working which wasn't earlier, but
my odometer is still not functional. I have replaced the
plugs, wires, and timing belt. The guy who did the tune-up
said that i have a adjustable cam gear. Could that be
off and causing my problem or is it something else??
Please help me because i'm about to pull my hair out!
Thanks, Sergio

your timing could be advanced one bit too much... even if your CEL is not on your ecu is still throwing the code...
code 15: ignition output signal, possible faulty ignitier
code 17: vehicle speed sensor, i belive this is on the back of the tranny where the speedometer cable goes in, make sure its put in properly...

Would those codes cause the car to do that? What does the ignitor do anyway??

the code 15 is probably the main cause of it.....
its something dealing with teh distributor i belive, have someone that knows more about it check it out and maybe even get it replaced....

and, if you have a friend with a crx around, see if he will elt you put his dist on your car and see ifyou still get hte code... might be that you need a new distributor... remember to reset your ecu..

I agree...sounds like a bad ignitor. If you've got the SI, 2nd gen (88-91) , I can sell you an ignitor that works for $65+shipping. Last time I checked, they went for about $100 new. See if u can borrow someone's first to see if that fixes the problem.

Usually just the ignitor or coil goes inside the distributor. The coil is easy to test with an ohmmeter. Ignitors I test by swapping

Check with your local Honda dealership...there is a recall on the ignitors for the CRX's...give em a call and find out if you have the faulty one...

the dealership even fix it??

The igniter is an easy part to swap if you have the tools. If you dont know how to do any of this work take it to a Honda dealer to have it serviced. The best thing I can tell you about the adj. cam gear is to set it at 0 if you arent into tuning etc. BTW the faulty ignitor with say OKI on it and it will be a brownish color if my memory is right. The Honda dealer wont perform any recall work if the auto is over 10 yrs old. HTH

Ok. I'm going to switch the ignitor with one of my other CRX's
and see what happens. I let you guys know the outcome.
