Default Oil consumption

Recently I bought an Honda Integra TypeR '00 with 66k km and looks like it's oil consumption (Shell Helix Ultra) is very high, about 1 liter per 1000 km or even more! The car is going well, no blue smoke from exhaust or oil leakage.
What is your oil consumption and do you have any ideas what's happening?

Greetings from Croatia, Sasa

Welcome to the board.... try the search, there are many related threads about oil consumption. And try putting in Catrol GTX 5-W30. Its the oil that Acura uses.

Your car will consume higher amounts of oil than other cars and its normal. But other oils burn more than others.

I'm currently monitoring my oil consumption as well.

I used to run Mobil 1 5w30 plus I drove the car hard everyday 9000RPM shifts regularly. My motor was consuming quite a bit of oil.

So I changed oil to Castrol Syntec 5w30. That didn't make a difference. Changed out the PVC valve recently. (It was not working correctly no rattle when shaken) and am also driving at a moderate pace shifting at 4000RPM max.

300KM into the test there are no sign of oil consumption for me.

For the next 1000km. I will dip into VTEC and see.

i use castrol gtx 5w-30 and see very little oil consumption. our motors typically burn 1 qt for every 3000 miles.

since you european guys have the best motor oils try:

castrol RS 0w-40
BP visco 5000 5w-40

i believe your manuals allow you to use 40wt. oils

Though the ITR typically consumes more oil than others due to it's nature, 1 liter per 1000km is rather high... personally, I'd say 1 litre per 5000-6000km is more of a reasonable range. Though I'd say lately, I've only had to top up less than 0.5 litres in the last 4000km.

How hard are you driving the car? When was your last oil change/flush? Maybe leave some newspaper under the car overnight or for a day (assuming it ever gets parked for that long), just to be really sure you aren't leaking anything.

I'd get a mechanical oil temp gauge to monitor your oil temperatures before you do anything drastic, like a rebuild of any sort.

I found that my oil burning issues were a direct result of oil temps + outside air (i.e, track) temps. Above a certain temp at the track, I was burning oil profusely. While driving the same car, same oil, at the same track in cooler temperatures, I did not have any oil burnoff except for what most of us would consider normal - about 1/4 to 1/3 per day, which equated to about 150 track miles (each day).

Depending on your driving habits... this may be your problem also. It's definitely a better first step than tearing the engine apart. A gauge and an oil cooler if necessary may be all you need.

hope that helps....

I'm not sure what PVC valve is... I asked Honda mechanic and he said that there is one valve (not sure how he named it) in carter (place where oil stands) and have to do something with some gases and pressure... But it's defect should not affect high oil consumption... Sorry for my bad english

Probably we'll have to open engine and replace oil rings. He said that they had Preludes and Civics with same problem, no smoke but abnormal oil consumption.

I don't drive to hard every day.

No, it isn't. The only "oil that Acura uses" is a special break-in oil that they put in the engine at the factory, that is not the same as the oil you buy at the store. It has special additives for a brand new engine.

Acura dealers are independent businesses who use different brands and kinds of oil. One dealer might use Castrol, another might use Pennzoil, another... etc.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30 and it's just fine. My engine doesn't consume any oil except at the track, and even then, it's not very much.

I believe it's a PCV valve, as in Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

PVC is a type of plastic, PolyVinyl Chloride.

My oil consumption dropped considerably after a trip to my local dealership for my 80k (km)main service, they put 5-30W Castrol TXT in my engine and now it consumes 1-2 dl of oil in 10k km's, previous oil used was 0-30 W.

I think there is something wrong with your engine.

Sounds like you need to do a leakdown/compression test and then tear the engine apart.
