Default CEL on = More power ??

Ok here's the deal... My CEL (Check Engine Light) came on a couple of days ago. I haven't gotten around to check it since I figure it must be the usual O2 sensor and the car is still under warranty so I'm not having a fit over it. Anyway, the thing is that the car feels A LOT more powerfull. I know its not just my ***-dyno because I just had a "pass" with a friend's Eclipse and I pulled at least a car-and-a-half more than usual. This is a USDM 2001 ITR with a Spoon head gasket and an IceBox, nothing more.

You may remember that I was having a hard time with the car because it dyno'd 160HP which I thought was too low. I never found anything wrong mechanically with the car. Could it be that this mystery sensor is throwing my settings off ??

I know this is kind of vague but any comments would be appreciated.

get the code, and tell us what it is. You sure the temp just isn't 30 degrees cooler like it is all of a sudden here? lol

you should advance the timing to about 17 degrees, and replace the sensor. my Si was set to 11 degrees and 16 is what the factory says to put it at, so i bumped mine only 2 degrees higher, and bam felt a lot quicker...just check it, and i dont know what your stock timing is but you should look into it
maybe the CEL has set things back to where they should be?
good luck!

Well, its been a while since I checked my timing and I don't remember where its at. I'll take a look while I'm checking the CEL code tonight.

If the CEL is on sometimes the ECU will dump more fuel to compensate to make sure it isn't running lean. How has your gas mileage been?

only with certain codes, and a really rich car will generally feel slower since B18C's don't generally make as much power when running extremely rich.

more fuel=less power. less fuel=more power.

I think it hit 49 down here south of Miami on Saturday night, but we have been seeing warm days, I think it peaked out at like 78 or 79 today.

Hmm... gas mileage is about the same as usual .. I didn't get a chance to check the CEL code last night.

When you say replace the sensor, you are talking about the O2 sensor that sits on the cat coverter, yes ?? I think this sensor was already replaced by the dealer sometime last year. Is there anything about bad O2 sensors on ITRs ??

Heh. My CEL is on and the car feels pretty damn fast, according to people who have driven it. Maybe you're onto something here.

I hear you ... my car was noticeably low on power (only 160whp as measured by the local dyno). I'm actually tempted to go and dyno the car now before I resolve the CEL issue..

For a stock type R, it isn't too bad... generally 158whp-164whp is a ballpark range for the stock USDM R, depending on conditions.

As for the CEL being more powerful, I guess it all depends on the code being thrown, my mine was complaining about my TB, it just seemed harder to control the throttle at low speeds, like it would just jerk forward instead of easing into first... I'm not sure if that's the type of "more powerful" you're feeling at.

I hope you aren't taking it to redline without knowning what the code is...

uhmm likely yes. No LSD that drains power and more power to begin with. What makes you think a more powerful motor with less loss would make less @ the wheels? or even the same drivetrain loss?

Yep... on paper, they are supposed to have 5 more sae hp than us anyway, plus the fact we have helical LSD from the factory... It must be that minivan frame that is keepin them down... lol... (hey, I didn't say it! It was Spoon's Ichishima!!)

They are slower because they weigh alot and they aren't geared to accelerate as fast as R's.
