there better not be a big problem b/c tomorrow i will be driving my car to the muffler shop to have my b-pipe extended to meet up with my cat (4.5" short) so i will be driving it with a header and cat installed on header for about 7miles (if that). this should be fun hahahah.

I've run open exhaust for a couple of months before thanks to some bad welds by an exhaust shop. Like was said above, try not to load the motor and you'll be fine. I had some kids block their ears as I crawled by under load (up hill). Still, it was fun to watch people pull out of the way for a little 70s Civic.

Problems with running open exhaust:
- Noise and added attention.
- Exhaust dumped under the motor might come through to the cabin in some cars.

I drove about 15 miles with an open header once, I didn't notice any ill effects to the engine. My ears on the other hand weren't pleased at all. At 6500rpm and WOT the entire car was resonating from the noise.

this is my theory about running open header on hondas, when turboed there is actually the opportunity to see hp gains when running open header, however on n/a small displacement motors i think you loose a 'scavanging effect', an example of this when intake and exhaust valves overlap the incoming intake charge displaces the exhaust thus forcing it out faster, which in turn pulls the intake charge in faster, this is especially apparent on 2 stroke motors, similarly with respect to exhaust piping, exhaust pulses that are in the piping can help 'pull' the exhaust pulses behind it, if you have too large piping or none at all, you loose this effect, this is one of the motivations behind header designs, they engineer them so that one exhaust pulse is in a suitable position to 'pull' the next one

I saw Indy racing when I was younger (when it was still called Indy racing) I can honestly say driving my stock b16 around is louder when it hits Vtec. It was so ******* cool sounding, it honestly sounds like a race car. That was only on the stock cast manny. I say give'r.

-edit-
just for the loudness, its something everyone should hear from their car at least once. It sounds OUT OF HAND fast.

I had to drive 6 miles with a open header on a new motor to do my exaust. I thought it was fun! It is acctually some what quite if you stay off it in town. But when you open it up WOW!!

When i was pulling apart my car after my accident before the insurance company took it away, it was run open header on limp mode. Talk about loud!

I can't say from experience, but alot of people who know their **** say if you run open header for too long it can warp and **** up your ****. Im sure a couple of runs at the track wont hurt. Just try not to drive like that daily.

Cool dude, i suggest you destry the motor in a cool way and video tape it, and post it. That is unless your going to sell the motor.

sell it. i wish i could destroy it, but a b16 is worth more money in one piece than in a million

yea i am with him. i dynoed my h22 with a open header and a exhaust. back pressure is a huge misconception. i gained 10 foot lbs in midrange and 6 hp with open header.

A friend of mine just installed a cr/vtec in his eg, since the existing exaust did not mount up, he has been driving around for about 10 days with an open exhaust manifold. It is very loud, but it sounds sick when it hit vtec. He has not had any problems.

nope, never heard of that- and I almost ALWAYS run open header.. I live in Idaho so it gets cold here too....
