Default Modifying the R: A Legal Approach

Well, after getting my first ticket in 6 years of driving and having the officer look under my hood for modifications, I've been tossing around the idea that maybe the modifications might not be worth the headache. I'm stock now, but I really don't want to be driving around all the time worrying about whether or not a cop will stop me and inspect my whole car and write a series of fix-it tickets for me.

My goal was to have hytech or sms system, and a mugen intake with the possible addition of cam gears and fuel upgrades if necessary with a tuning device. Now, I've been trying to decide what I can do to modify my car while maintaining a stock look.

My only ideas so far are the comptech icebox, and jdm 4-1 header with heat-shield. I'd like to be modified, but to still be able to pass smog and visual inspection as well as inspections from the police.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

its a good thing we dont have to worry about that to much down here in florida..

in terms of modding it, but making it look stock... for the intake you can just replace the filter...a nd that wouldnt change anything visually... the jdm 4-1 headers with heat shield would be a good choice also

Not unless he mods the OEM cat to fit, purchases a 100,000 mile cat, or installs a 2.5" cat just for the sniffer test. After speaking with the CARB guys that were right next to HyTech's shop, the Carsound cat will fail the sniffer if the car is re-tested a year after installation. The cat just isn't designed to last 100,000 miles like the OEM cat...which is why the OEM cat is ~$800(I think, could be ~$600).

i hope I don't jinx myself by posting this but I will kindly decline to open my hood or any inspection of my car by any officer. Don't have anything to hide but I shouldn't have to be subjected to roadside inspections either.

yshi - who says getting pulled over b/c of... to quote a cop, "if you look like streetracer, then you are a street racer" is BS!

in HS a cop pulled me over b/c rear tail light was out. cop pulled me over. told me to pop my hood. i said no. having a modified exhaust is enough probable cause for a cop to look under your hood.

Denny- who tried yoshi tactacts, but fail miserably

There are quite a few guys in NoVA who pass emissions in Fairfax Co, Arlington and Alexandria using the JDM OEM header and Carsound cat.

Mea culpa. I thought the Carsound cat was a gimme.

Maybe we have more stringent quality standards in California, but that's what I was told...and I've had to lend out my stock cat to 3 different people to get their cars passed after purchasing a new Carsound cat.

But what about the cat used by Hytech, it is supposed to last 100000 miles? So i won't have any problems passing a smog test as long as the car is tuned correctly?
I hate the thought of having to pulle the whole exhaust and reinstall OEM for a smog check.

If you put Carb stickers all over the place that will be an eyesore to a cop...

Thanks for the responses

So, with an icebox, jdm 4-1, carsound cat and some tuning, what is a rough estimate of the hp I would gain? I'm not going to factor in the comptech exhaust because if I remember correctly, the pipe diameter is same as stock.

thanks

What are you going to tune with? VAFC?

I'd estimate 8-10 hp TUNED with just a VAFC.

You might be able to get away with cam gears too if you don't run a cut valve cover.

Skunk2 Stg 1 cams are also carb legal

Yea, I figured that since my setup wont be that extreme, going for a more advanced tuning device would be a waste of money. I also was planning to have cam gears without cutting the valve cover.

I'm wondering if there would be a way to fit stock heat shield around the smsp header.
