I'm considering getting my brake system flushed and refilled at some shop, but are there synthetic brake fluids like there are synthetic motor oils and are they worth it? How much might a dealer charge for the flush and fill and would it be worth it to use the synthetic stuff (if it exists) or just Honda's brake fluid? Not changing any parts, just want to replace the fluid.

 

valvoline makes a good brake fluid, but i used ATE super blue which one of the best besides motul.

 

What's the capacity of a 97 EX's brake system, roughly?

 

not very much, ATE stuff is sold in 1 liter bottles and i have atleast 1/2 -2/3 left. if you buy honda fluid or valvoline just get 1 of those little bottle, a pint i believe.

 

use DOT oem dot 4(oil based)

I heard there's dot 5.1 can be used with abs equiped car.
upper boiling point, wont absorb water(silicone based), all that good stuffs.

cant use 5.0 with abs pump tho'

 

DOT 5 is based on silicone, but DOT 5.1 is NOT. I think it's a poly-glycol like DOT 3 & 4.

I heard Valvoline SynPower was a 5.1 synthetic that happened to satisfy 3 & 4, so it's labeled as DOT 3 & 4. I'm not even sure that's true because I can't find anything to verify that statement. Apparently 5.1 requires lower viscosity, and 3/4 don't actually prohibit the low viscosity.

I tried SynPower, but I had some troubles with it. I suspect the low viscosity because I got a squeaking sensation in my clutch like the MC & SC piston seals weren't being lubricated. I went back to Castrol LMA on the Accords & I tried ATE Blue on the GS-R & Saab.
