Default Best Engine (for my girl friend) for her 4Door

hey, I have an EG, so I'm never on this side of the forum,

my friend blew his 91 DX engine in his 4 door, and was going to bring it to the junk yard, so I picked the car up for 100$ for my girl friend for christmas. My question is, what would be the best engine to swap in, she'll be paying for it and she has till this summer to save up, so I was think either a B16A1 or just a D15B Vtec engine.

I was jsut wondering what engines fit in the EF's bay ? because I don't know the 91s and under.

oh, and I'll be buying the engine from http://www.total-boost.com because the're local here, and I know the owner (real nice guy)

thanks in advance

Dan

Any B-Series & D-Series will fit in the EF engine bay. It's the same as the EG's.

Why not just put a stock motor back in?

Does she like to bang gears or something?

I would suggest a ZC. Simply because it is the simplest to swap. Plus all Si parts are direct add ons to the ZC pretty much. Plus it is cheaper and you can do alot with it.

I just though of something..

a 91 DX isn't wired for vtec by any chance is it ?

so if it's not, am I better off with the B18B ? or is Vtec wiring pretty simple ?

keep in mind that I have never done a swap before

I have a d16z6 motor in my four door EF.. I like it alot- its plenty peppy, and a VERY cheap and VERY easy swap- vtec is a simple process if you use a vtec controller or a shift light to activate

If you have never done a swap before, and she's not really going to race it, get a stock replacement, or just a good D15 non-VTEC. Keep everything DPFI unless you're up to the challenge of converting the car to MPFI. It can be challenging for a first timer. And no, the car is not prewired for VTEC, or for 4 fuel injectors.

well, I'll be with a couple of my buddys.

and your right, vtec is probebly too much for me to handle, since I have never done this befor

and I don't really want to go stock, I think i'll go with the B18B,

lil girl in a 4 door = ultamite sleeper.

and since I want to put a B18B in my EG, (when I get money) this will be like my ginny pig. I'll learn off of hers

Well the B16 is OBD 0 and has a OBD 0 ECU so the VTEC wiring for thats is real simple and if you buy the sub harness(or make your own) you only have to add a couple of wires.
The sohc VTEC is a buigger job if you want to do it right with the full OBD 1 conversion but that to can be made simple with a OBD 0 to OBD 1 convesion harness.

My current 92 EG has the stock DX engine in it, I'm planning on swapping it,

so to save some cash, might as well put that engine in her car, it was women driven and only has 127000 Km on it, and runs real good.

are the 92 DX engines the same as the 91's ?

No. You'll need to reuse the distributor, intake manifold, ECU, etc off your old motor if you plan on using the DX motor. (Newer DX's [92+] are mpfi) - your 91 DX is dual point injected. Plus, the 92 is OBD-I, your 91 is OBD-O.

For a swap, I would say a nice torquey OBD-I B18B would be great.

I say go stock... don't 'practice' on your girl's car... what if it breaks down while she's alone ?!?! At least if it's your car, you have a chance in hell at fixing it... but she doesn't.

If you go swap... I vote B18B.

You never said what your budget was for the new motor....assuming minimal cash.
(a) Convert the DPFI to MPFI
(b) Get a sohc ZC(obd-0) Makes 118 hp stock and it bolts in just like a D16a6(88-91 si) motor. Forget vtec...on the sohc it's just not impressive enough to deal with the cost and hassle.
The sohc ZC motors can be found for sub $400 prices easily.

and as for the ZC, http://www.total-boost.com doesn't carry those for some reason.. I only see the D15B with Vtec,

but since Vtec looks likes it's a bitch do to for a person with 0 expirience, I think I'll get her to buy the b18b.

I just thouhg this was stupid since, we each have a car, I have a good engine and swapping it for a b18b, she has no engine and putting in a b18b. I just thouhg I could give her my my old one... but I would be really cool if we both had B18Bs...

and funds are minimal, about 1000$ cnd and that's what the B18B is

You should be able to find a DOHC ZC in your area for pretty cheap. Shouldn't be more than 500-600. It is a direct bolt in and all you have to do is wire it up for mpfi. Its cheap, easy and its alot faster then the stock dx motor.

The 88-91 DX's had only 2 injectors so you have to convert from DPFI to multi point fuel injection.

you can't do a B18b for $1000. Just because they don't have something on their website doesn't mena they can't get it, or they may already have it. If you're such good buddies, call him and ask.
For $1000, a dohc or sohc ZC are about what you can do.
