When clutch is pressed in there is no noise. I can be in neutral with the clutch out or in gear and driving when there is a grinding noise coming from the trannie area. Is this the throw out bearing, shifter fork, or the main shaft bearing?? I searched and really found no definate answer. Please help.
Hard to tell without hearing it. Throw out bearing sometimes make noise when the clutch is not pressed in. I've heard quite a few that just squeeked, not really grinding noise. Almost like a loose belt.
Sounds like it might be a tranny bearing very common problem. If the clutch is pushed in and you can't hear it then you let it out and you can that is usually a main shaft or input shaft bearing.
On a side note my tranny grinds in neutral, and all subsequent gears. My mechanic took it for a ride and told me the clutch was fuxored....and the throwout bearing and the pressure disk....basically everything.

Thanks. I already have the helms & have done all my work myself, so far. I have all the tools I need.
I will be pulling the tranny off soon. Hopefully it isn't a tranny bearing and just the throw out bearing. We will see.

Input shaft bearing....an oddly familiar reply, seen that somewhere before. Anyway, if you're pulling the tranny anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal to see whats wrong. Transmission problems usually have a way of being painfully obvious whats wrong if you have ANY mechanical background at all. Dont be afraid to tear into that tranny either...it just looks kinda overwhelming at first. When you drop the tranny down, give the input shaft a good shaking, if you can feel any play (and I mean even the most minute amount of shaft movement), you've got a spring washer worn out or like the guy above me has said before, an input shaft bearing. Let us know how it turns out.
