UR Crank Pulley installed... rough running, similar experience?
For the hell of it, since I had to pull the crank pulley to replace the timing belt / water pump anyway, I put on a UR Crank Pulley. I am 100% positive all the belts are on correct (balancer belt in particular). I noticed IMMEDIATELY upon startup the engine does NOT run smooth like it used to. It is like one of the balancer shafts is out of whack but I am sure it's aligned the same way it was when I took it off. Any ideas what's going on here?... does the pulley make that much of a difference!? Did those of you with UR Crank Pulleys experience something similar? Help I don't want to ruin my engine... that was a pain in the *** to install too...
The funny thing is I just took the engine apart again and found that both belts were a tooth off, so I fixed that and to my surprise it STILL runs rough. Checked Ignition timing, triple checked all the belts... it does not run like it used to. What the hell!?
Did you put the timing belt key in same order? And check the crank pulley to see if it wobbles to the side a bit. And the tension of the belts, too. Maybe you need to change the timing or new battery/distributor/spark plugs/plug wires because your alternator is now underdriven. Do your lights dim quite a bit at idle, too?
It has nothing to do with the pulley, something else is messed up... In all honesty, all that pulley does is spin your alt, P/S, & A/C (if you keep stuff like that). So unless you have that pulley on like completely screwy, it's something else wrong with your motor. One thing that I will tell you is double check the covers for the timing belt. Sometimes if those aren't seated perfectly, they can cause your crank pulley to rub, making the motor act yup...

yah dood, double and triple check your balancer belt and timing belt alignment. sounds like you didn't slap the belt on right. the solid crank pulley won't affect the vibration at all.

The stock pulley has a harmonic dampener, which has a purpose of dampening the engine's vibrations. The UR doesn't. The roughness you feel may well be from the absence of that dampener, in which case it would be wise to take it off and put back your stock pulley, because you may be causing damage to your crankshaft.
i am currently using a UR race pulley on my h22a with no balance shafts. the race pulley is the tiny one that only drives the alternator. it weighs less than a pound.
i removed the balance shaft belt and swapped pulleys at the same time and the engine still runs very smooth. the amount of vibration at idle did increase some.
over the past yeaar it has not run any rougher either.
define what you meana by rurnning rough. arae you talking about a rough idle or are you talking about increrased vibration too the chassis?

PROBLEM SOLVED
It was my fault. Even though I marked both the balance shafts before removing the belt, I did not realize the rear shaft is gear driven by the rear pulley. One rotation of the pulley does not equal one rotation of the balance shaft! It only lines up at certain instances... SO I did what it said in the manual this time and everything is all smooth, UR pulley and all! YAY!
