What does it mean if your turbo glows red?
I heard that this means it is running too rich then i heard that it's running too lean. Which one is it, and would a stand alone fuel management system solve that problem?
takes alot of heat to glow em.
i would say your pushing the turbo to hard.
i havent seen too many glowing. never seen mine even come close.. i got s200bd though

You need to add timing for one...glowing turbo's mean that the charge is still burning in the housing and is indicative of extremely high egts. That can be detrimental to the health of your exhaust valves, turbo and/or downpipe. I'd add both fuel and timing and get some way to monitor your a/f's if there's that much question if you're lean or rich!!

i would never run a turbo w/out a fuel management system (not a fmu)... asking for trouble.
i'd get that thing on a dyno and see what your a/f is doing asap.

Ive only seen a turbine housing glow red on a 1.8t on a gti. But those are small **** turbos and he had an aftermarket chip which increased the boost a lot. So basically it was spinning verrrry fast and had a lot of exh goin through it.
I've seen normal HEADERS glow from too-lean, so I assume the same could happen to a turbo.
I have seen a turbo glow from being pushed hard, but i'd say it's either lean, retarded timing, or both.

my brother's turbo was glowing red a few months ago. The local shop had to remove his tranny and put it back in after screwing up and using a napa axle which caused the Quiafe to go bad, etc, etc. Anyhow, they shorted the wire from the MF2 to the extra injectors between the tranny mount and tranny... The IC was flooded, which was fixed. Took it for a spin, and the Check Engine light would come on right as he hit any boost (fuel got into the MAP sensor we discovered) and by the time we got home the turbo had a nice red hue to it

Retarded ignition timing could be the culprit also.

Hey.. thanks for the input guys. I am gonna get Microtech system and tune the **** out of it this week. They say I should have a 12 second Lude with this system and some 550 injectors. We'll see how it goes. http://www.microtechefi.com
It means you pushed that turbo pretty hard. It's not completely normal for this to happen all the time, but it's also not a *that* big of a deal.
If it's hot, it's running LEAN... just like when you detonate from lack of fuel. If it was running rich it would be cooler.
Get some sort of fuel management, and get it tuned!!!!

Could also be super hot if the turbo is too small for the application and is spinning too fast outside of it's efficency range, creating too much heat. Maybe lubrication problem too? Oil line not feeding properly? Needs to be rebuilt?
My Conquest's turbo would glow sometimes. You could read a ******' BOOK by it. Then again... 15psi and running it hard was the only reason for that.
Retarded timing and running lean are my two votes.

It means you should not have a turbo on your car because you did not tune it.

it means its running lean... your car has lack of gasoline due to high boost pressure.
Get bigger injectors or a fuel regulator

I am planning on getting a stand alone fuel management system, but unsure of which one. I initiaially wanted hondata, but some peeps down here in Orlando are tellin me to get Microtech. I know this and some injectors would solve this problem. Just need to make a decision.
IT IS BECAUSE U ARE RUNNING REALLY RICH!!! THIS MEANS THAT FIRE AND COMBUSTING GASES ARE GOING INTO YOUR EXHAUST HOUSING AND HEATING IT TO 1400 PLUS DEGREES!!! LEAN MIGHT MAKE IT HOT , BUT NOT RED!!! THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME, THEN I LEANING THE **** OUT OF IT, AND IT NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN, THIS HAPPENED TO MY BUDDIES SILVIA, SAME STORY !!! RICH NOT lean!!!!!!!!
