Get an aftermarket one . . . The STR ones are only like $21 shipped on eBay, and are about eleventy billion percent better than the stock plastic POS.

it is not plastic it is a rubber compound, and was designed to be replaced.

Won't putting the retainer on be just as effective as getting an STR? I mean, surely the retainer should keep the thing from leaking right?

the STR one is billet alum, while the OEM is a rubber/plastic compound. Honda has altered the compound the newer ones are made from. The old ones would get hard and crack, thus causing the oil leak.

STR =

Yeah, but my point is, if using the retainer does the same job, then why buy the STR?

That's the first I've heard that Honda had revised the compound. I know the one I took out of my '97 has the consistency of a lego.

The aftermarket ones may be more expensive than a stock replacement, but at $21, an STR one is hardly gonna break the bank. And you'll never need to worry about it again - cheap insurance, if you ask me.

If it's leaking, buy an STR, if it's not leaking who cares. Look at it from time to time. replace it if it becomes a problem

the STR one is the way to go.

I think the stock one is only about $6, but YOU WILL have to keep replacing it. You won't have to replace the STR unit.

BUT, if you buy the retainer you WON'T have to replace it. Right?

Any reason to go with the STR one compared to the GE one? Personally I like the GE one better as it has three seals over the STR two.

The STR one's a couple bucks cheaper. **shrug** I can't imagine either one leaking. I think AEBS makes one as well . . . .

rkonfire - what retainer do you keep talking about?

A retainer is what the recall fix is by Honda for the seal. It basically holds the seal in from what I understand. So, if you can buy this retainer for 4 bucks, why buy some "super duper" one for 20 if they both accomplish the same thing?

The retainer fix is for the balancer shaft seal, not the cam seal.
