TO3/TO4e turbo good with b16a?
"TO3/TO4E Hybrid Garrett Turbo . TO3 turbine is a .63 AR with a stage 3 wheel . TO4E Compressor is a .50 AR with a 57 trim wheel"
how good would this turbo be with a custom setup on a b16a2 engine running approx 6.5psi?
anyone running one on standard internals.
1.when does it start to spool?
2. does it have power all the way till 7500rpm?
3. how drivable is it?
cheers in advance people

i am the process of installing turbo and all. almost done. using the same turbo. talk to http://www.cheapturbo.com and ken said youll see boost around 3k and it will pull to 8k redline, ill be driving it daily with 8 psi. talk to ken though, nice guy
The .63 turbo will not spool up for a while - most here say 5000-5500 RPM then all hell breaks loose.
I chose to do the t3/t4e with the .48A/R AND 2 1/2 inch charge pipes from the turbo to the throttle body. This allows more air into the engine when the turbo spools up but makes it a bit more laggy. Think of it this way.... A 2 1/2 inch pipe will allow 25% more air to flow at the same PSI versus a 2 inch pipe.
My car spools to 7 PSI by about 4500 RPM and pulls like a **** thru redline. It still has too much boost in 1st and 2nd as I cant hammer it until 3rd gear. I have an AEM EMS and this setup did a 0-60 in 5.12 seconds the other day so I am pretty happy with those numbers.
Two keys to think about - Turbo size and charge pipe size

yah man thats too big of a turbo for that motor, its not gunna spool up fast enough for your liking. Sure when that turbo spools up your car is gunna haul *** but until then your turbo lag is going to be awful
I'd get something smaller.
I'd get something smaller.
what are your goals with this car there are several of members with sc61 and sc63 turbos on the stock bottom end b16's and they hit full boost around 5500 it depends on what manifold you are using, and compression

my goals are around 350-375 whp, i have a stock bottom except some je 9:1 pistons so i know i might not reach my goal til i get some sleeves and rods. but i got the t3/t04e 57 trim 63 a/r turbine 60a/r comp side. my fuel is rc 550cc and walboro 255 pump with hondata s200b, 3 inch dp to 3" pipe all the way back.
I'm running this turbo on my D16. Starts making boost at 4000RPM at 4500RPM it will reach full boost. If I'm drag racing and shifting at 7800RPM it pulls hard. But it didn't autox worth a crap. It acts alot like a 125 motox bike.
I got a friend using that turbo on his B16A2 and it starts to spool at around 4500rpm and it goes strong to the top. I'm not to impressed with this turbo with low boost. Drivability is good. Alot of manufactors use this turbo cause its 'streetable' with some decent power. What are your goals?? High HP?? Track?? AutoX?? Street??
a 57t 63a\r should see full boost before 4k i gues its operfect for a b16 but your not on stock internals! with a lower compression ratio you might spool a lot later! but theres lots of other things that determine your spool rpm!
by the way im not so good in your language, whats autox?

I'm sorry I said start to spool at 4500 I meant full boost at 4500 at 8psi. He starts to spool at around 3700 which isn't that late but there are definately better turbos out there for the same cost at the T3/T4 .63 trim.

i just put on a smaller turbo on my b16a2 i used the 50 trim 48 a/r stage 3 from cheap turbo ..i spool about 8 psi by 3300 untuned..setup as follows
inline pro manifold
inline pro head gasket
arp studs
rc 440's
custom pipes tyrus intercooler
hondata s2b
delta gate
rfl bov
still breaking in the new clutch so i cant say how it really pulls

is your new headgasket thicker than the original? thenn your lowering your compr. and youl spool later! but ok if yo think 4k is too late to spool for you then buy a smaller one!
turbine side .63a/r stage 3 wheel -comp side 50 a/r 46trim
i have a stock 1st gen b16a with stock internals @ 7lbs.. i see 7 lbs at 4500rpm. If you lanuch the car.. theres no lag and it pulls very nicely up to 8k. but if youre on the street at 3000 rpm in 3rd gear and you floor it.. yer not gonna go anywhere(i dont know why you would want to do that).. i dont know.. everyone always talks about lag and all this other bullshit.. its called downshifting. and driveability? drives like any other car when it doesnt see boost.
put that turbo on im sure you will have a blast with that thing.

Auto cross (autoX) as stated above I don't know if you saw that. And if you still don't know what it is...its an event where you go to to test your driving skills where you are timed. Its like a road course and can be in a parking lot or on a track.
I'm using a smalle turbo its a 14B out of a 1st gen eclipse GSX. This thing doesn't have that much ***** it only pushes a max of 450cfm's. I start to spool at 2200 rpm and get full boost at around 3000rpm. Faster spool to 8psi translates out to quick acceleration and lots of tire spin. I would beat anyone of these big turbo guys in the 1/8 mile run but at the top the bigger turbo would win everytime. I built my engine so that I could do a quick drop on the streets and blast quickly out of a turn when auto crossing.
I've raced plenty of cars with bigger turbo setups and the end result is pretty much equal unless you're running insane amounts of boost. And from what I've noticed smaller turbos will spool and give you the edge on the bottom end giving you a commanding lead off the start and threw 1st and 2nd gear. But what always happens is the car with the bigger turbo will alway catch up in a mile run. Do a drop on the streets and I'll win everytime. It takes 200rpm for this smaller turbo to spool and its instant power.
That's why I ask what is your goal?? Do you want a quick quarter mile?? Or do you want something mid range for the streets?? You have to put alittle thought into what turbo is best and the way you figure that out is going to be the goal you intend to reach.
So make a goal and I'll help you the best I can with a turbo to match what you're looking for.

wel i can,t speek for mr kelsonmassiv but my goals are: 220whp@+_8psi. spool @4k would be perfect for me because i like to chose between a good fuel milage|reliability and a fast engine(past 4k) thats why i fell in love with the vtec in first place! thats why lots of people advised me to go with a t3t4 57trim 63a\r.
and mr 1.6 whats your management?hp? exhaust size? cat or no cat?boostcontroller?
thanks!

For autoX the t3- super 60 is the best according to the compressor maps. Although Garrett themselves recommend a .63 turbine for the B16 mainly because of the high RPM range. When comparing t04e trims I found that a .54 was the most efficient compressor for that motor. It was in the 80% range from 7-16psi. The .60 trim is also good, but a litle on the large side.
The suggested AR for the turbine (t3) for a b16 is .63. Your only other reasonable option for turbines is a .48. Which is great for LS motors because they don't rev as high but the .48 tends to drop off at higher rpm. The most efficient compressor (t04e) is a .50 AR housing with a .54 trim wheel. A a .57 wheel is not as efficient on the b16 as a .60 trim compressor, even though it is "smaller".
