03 Accord question
My aunt and uncle bought an 03 Accord here a while back, and it is coming up time for them to change their oil... The dealership told them not to change it for the first time until 10K miles... Is there any basis to that, or should they change it earlier than that... I had never heard that before, so I figured I'd hit up the expert panel
Thanks in advance...

well, i know on most motors with brand new rings, (i.e. rebuilt and brand new) i've always heard that you change it at 500, 1000, and 2000 miles before you start going on the regular 3000 mile intervals...that's just to be safe of course and to get everything broken in nicely...
Honda wants you to hold off on your first oil change until over 4k miles. The reason for this is because unlike old breakins which were done with a physical abrasive such as graphite, the new motors have additives in the oil that replace the old methods of breakin. They take longer to do their job however, hence the 4k breakin period. The newer 4 cyls. are on a 10k maintenance cycle that under mild service conditions only have to have oil changes every 10k to maintain warranty. We usually reccomend 5k intervals where I work. The newer v6 cars are on a 7500 mile schedule so we usually reccomend every 3750 miles.

It's in the September 98 Service News, on the second page. It's good for showing the old school first 500 mile people that it's a Honda recomendation.

You mean this:
Don’t Replace Original Engine Oil Too Soon
NOTE: This article originally appeared in the August
’96 issue of S/N.
On all Hondas (except Passport), the original engine oil
contains additives to protect the engine during its
break-in period. Since these additives aren’t in
over-the-counter oils, make sure the first oil change
happens at the recommended mileage/time interval, and
not before.
I don't see anything about 4000 miles there, did you just make that up?

Thanks for the info... I'll pass it along, and maybe she'll stop worrying about voiding her warranty
