Default sleepers are not really sleepers! if that makes any sense

i was thinking about this...
i think people have a bad idea of what a sleeper is..

lately it seems people are taking the sleeper idea too far. a hatchback with a carbon fiber hood and black spoon rims is the farthest thing from a sleeper to me..
if that rolls up next to me first thing i think is this guy has some goods under the hood..

i think there are 3 basic classifications of cars:
there are the show cars; these are what people generally call non-sleeper but if a integra rolled up next to me with a big body kit and 18's i would assume hes slow..although he could have a fully built motor and turbo but i would assume hes slow..
there are the race cars; a close to stock integra lowered w/ gunmetal volk TE-37's, carbon fiber hood, and gauges on the A-pillar, generally these guys dont mess around although this look could one day be the "show" look..
then there are the stock cars;these are the only ones i would consider a sleeper.. It would have to look completely stock and only a pop of the hood a note from the exhuast would set it off as not a sleeper..

Does anyone agree that people are getting the sleeper look and race look confused? and that what cars people are calling sleepers is the cars i would be most worried about!

01GSR has got a sleeper.

Mine looks about as fast as it is. Typical GS-R w/wheels, lowered, exhaust. Although it never had a DOHC VTEC badge. ;-)

My CRX will look like another beat up CRX with the faded rio red paint and busted up fender....oh boy oh boy.

right on man,
i totally agree with you

I was just driving with my freind last night in his 2nd g talon with about ~310 hp @crnk

we were trying to dial the boost in correct. he was driving in 4th floored, but early in power band (4.5k ish) we are going about 100 (under full boost 18psi) and this 88 crx comes flying past. it was cool as hell

the crx had tint and old chrome lookin exhaust, im am guessing he had about a 180 hp engine

now that car was a sleeper

would you consider a car with ugly *** body kit, big aluminum wing, funkitated headlights and the altezza taillights (typical rice) a sleeper?

I think this might be the road that a lot of people will be going soon, because once the movement was tastefull mods, when people saw the hondas with tastefull mods they began to be warry, now when people see stock looking, deep note, and sparse guages they thing sleeper, but people still laugh histerically at the rice look. I think it is only a matter of time (in fact this weekend I saw one) before people start masking the go fast with rice.

what I saw this weekend, a early 90s accord, big aluminum wing, paint job was in pretty bad shape, some kind of big front end, altezza tails, projector fronts and the chrome rims rounded out the whole deal, the only thing I saw outwardly was an intercooler, but I thought nothing of it. then he pops his hood, it was an H22 with a turbo. mid 13 second car that doesn't look like it would break out of 15s without someone pushing it. that is a sleeper.

i think that car was at river city raceway near san antonio last wednesday...i witnessed a 13.5...but the car you described fits this description exactly, and your in houston, so its very possible

How about a Black HX with a black primered hood/bumper/fender and 13" stock CRX rims covered in black brake dust?
"HX" emblem still on the back too.

Does that qualify as a sleeper?

Reminds me of a maroon 90ish accord coupe I saw this weekend. Had a big ricey aluminum wing, wasn't fond of the wheels he had...other than that it looked stock (actually alot like my dad's old car). Then I walked to the front and spotted the FMIC. Then the DOHC VTEC valve cover (had hood popped). Yeah, it'd be humbling to see those taillights. Owner said something like 270 at the wheels. Chit.

The last thing you wanna stare at if you lose a race is a car with alteezas, giant aluminum wing, and 6" rice tip.

Has anyone noticed the steady increase of enthusiasts that know their shet, but rice out their cars?

Sleepers are for drag racing only.

There are a few ugly *** CRXs in the DSP class. Only way to tell is the huge numbers and class stickers on the side of the car

I would have to agree with DIRep, if it looks pretty stock and it smokes you...that's what a sleeper is.... But I must admit, lately I have been seeing some very fast, stock looking cars and a few beaters too...

Eg: Stock looking civic with American prime rims and a B18C transplant

Teg, clean, GS-R rims, lowered, no 'Honda Magic' badge... and fast...
Teg, slightly crashed front bumper... fading paint..... and a Wrrrring sound coming from the engine bay Loose A/C belt ? I don't think so....

Things just may be changing.... We drive the new 'Muscle Cars' of the century..... and Honda is like what Ford was to muscle cars from years ago !

I agree with everyone.. a sleeper is a car you figure is slow, but kicks your ***... also has to look relatively stock.

i consider my car a sleeper... i have an exhaust/springs and clear corners.. same as every other integra running around... which is the point.. less attention, then again, when I get on it.. she opens up her true bedside manner

the ultimate sleeper... an old school mirage with a fully built 2L gsx motor and tranny... fading paint... BONE STOCK LOOKING...(except for some black wheels) now thats a sleeper... or for that fact... any of the old school mirages or colts that came with the 1.6L turbo motor from the factory... also for the reason that NO ONE knows about them...

one guy i met... old mirage, stock 1.6, 16g, vpc, fmic, piping, bov, wg and a few more goodies... looking BONE STOCK! those are sleeper cars... not an integra...

another guy i know has a bone stock 5th gen civic hatch... all he has is a tach... plus the h22 under the hood

i love sleepers... but the truth is the ultimate sleepers are the dsm's
