K20 into 2001+ Civics - free information
Hello,
We are in the process of swapping the D17 out of the new Civics and installing the K20 motor (in this case, from the Si). Rather than dish out a million dollars for the mount kits that are available, we took a look at one of our boxes of old mounts and thought about installing the motor using Honda parts.
On the right side, we used a 96-00 Civic left mount (slightly modified for the angle of the fender well) on the body. Above it, we made a [rough] adapter plate that bolts to the K20's studs. Keep in mind, we are just starting out with this, so the work is a bit rough right now. One of the bolts lines up correct with an existing hole from the battery tray, one gets a hole drilled top to bottom through the frame rail, and another gets a hole at the wheel well. We plan to use a backing plate at the wheel well, possibly with a stud to minimize interferance issues.
On the left side, we used one of the K20's mounts - drilled straight through the frame rail for two of the bolts and made a simple bracket for the top bolt. The ABS bracket required some notching, but a replacement bracket could be made for next to nothing.
Obviously, there would be many other items to address, but we thought these pictures and ideas might encourage more people to try the swap without shelling out a grand for some mounts. If you put some time into it, doing it yourself could end up looking quite nice with some powdercoating. We think you could get away with this type of mounting for less than fifty bucks.

Since your solution requires welding, wouldn't it be easier to buy 2003 Si framerail brackets and weld them to their proper location and then use the mounts that came with the K20? They go in like stock.
Oh, and who charges a grand for mounts? The only company that makes them is us and they're not a thousand bucks.

Brian....I called you for the mounts..nobody would sell them so i made something happen
there was no welding except the bracket i built
But that was easy...there has to be options..

I'm sorry you weren't able to get mounts, but when I said welding I was talking about the welding I saw in your pictures. If instead of welding brackets, as you did, you weld stock brackets to the frame rails you can use all stock mounts.
There are always options, I was just pointing out a better option if you were including welding, which you did. BTW the only reason I even commented on this post was because of the weird comment about mounts costing "a grand". It was completely incorrect. And since we are the only company to make mounts for that swap, I felt compelled to make a comment.

sure.....It wasn't directed toward you,,,just in general...We heard from other companies after contacting you they were working on stuff
or custom stuff would be a grand...so this was an option..the welding was the adapter the
other stuff bolted in...
