Here is the situation, I had to do a smog check for my dad's 95 MAZDA MX-3 this saturday. It turns out that the DMV randomly selects certain vehicles to do the smog check at a TEST ONLY place. (At the "test only" place u can only test it & if it fails to bad & if you pass then you pass. If you didnt pass you have to go to another shop to get it fix & then go back to the TEST ONLY place to test it again.

My questions is this, How do all of you with all-motor setups pass smog check? I am assuming that you know of a place that "will pass you", am I correct? If so, what happens when you get the letter from the DMV to go to the TEST ONLY place??? (it seems to me that the DMV is doing this so owners wont bribe the shop owner to pass their vehicles, the test only place is licensed by the DMV i belive, so this way you cant bribe them.) I hope I made sence

the only thing you can do is cry...luckily honda engines are so easy to swap in and out..if it ever came to that..

 

hahahaha, whats up esteban. yeah, I haven't even started on the engine & I am already crying cause I have no idea what I would do. Good thing for us the our cars won't need smog check till a few years later. I wonder if we could find a test only shop where we could "pass"

Register it in a different state. Don't you have any out of state freinds you could go visit? Just pick up a drivers liscense and registration while you're there.

 

add an oxygenate to your fuel. it will lean you out considerably.

newt2: thats a good idea, it never crossed my mind to do that. So can I have the car registered under a differnt state & live here? or you meant to have it registered under a friend's address in a different state?

D: I heard about something like that before & I was actually looking for it to pass my dad's MAZDA but I had to replace the cat. Do you know how it works or what it does to the engine? It makes the car run with less emissions temporarily right? where can I find one?

 

propylene oxide is the bomb. do not use more than 10% by volume mixed with your fuel. i'd say, more like 2 or 3%.

hydrogen peroxide will do the trick also.... not your 99% dilute hydrogen peroxide found at thrift drug... real stuff...

uh, not sure where you could find it, go to some circle track races and ask around.... and well, oxygenates will provide a lot more O2 in your fuel, ie, it will lean out your AF ratio because you will need less stoichiometric Air to burn all your fuel. so, you'll have more complete combustion, hence, less emissions, and you will be running much leaner. and well, if you fed more fuel, you'd just be making more power then... guess not necessary for the mazda tho...

yeah and after than you can go ahdea and replace your fried valves! just pay someone to pass it for you. work longer hours.

 

moderate use for 1 tankful.... cmon, not a big deal.

I'm sure that lots of folks know where they can get their modded engines "smogged" but whut they aren't tellin' us in how much it will cost!

LOL. you guys make me laugh. Well, what do i do? Easy. I just smog it.

Having a smog license is definitely a plus.

That hydrogen whatever-you-call-it probably won't work these days. Since we now test for nox emissions, running lean could make it worse. Running lean/hot means higher nox emissions.
