Default Symptoms: its one of 2 things: opinions please:

compression results = 240,240,240,120.

Cyl 4 has low. We put in a cap full of oil and it jumped to 210 compression.

The car runs fine still... just feels sluggish... idles fine etc etc.

In the last week ive seen more and more black carbon sut on the back bumper (very fine, whipes away).. in speckles.

My mechanic said that the mojority of cars he's seen that have this problem is due to a burnt valve. My first instinct said rings or ring lands. But for some reason my gut is going with that... due to me leaning it out with a vafc (never below 13:1 comrpession.. and yes i dyno tuned).. And ive never over reved the motor at all. (i hti the rev limiter a few times, but nothing that made me worry).

shrug.. ill be pulling the head next week when i'm done with school and only have to drive to work ( borrow a car ).

Would love for it to be just a rings... if it is and i'm pulling hte head i wanna get valves/retainers/springs and have my friends machine shop give the head a "going over" -=].. but if its the ring lands and there is scarring i'm gonna be Pissed.

What is your gut feeling?

that is ring failure. what you performed was a wet compression test. when you have low compression on a cyl the easy way to tell if it is ring is to put oil in the cyl. the oil seals the rings.

i would always do a leak down test to confirm that this is your only problem.

hmmm cool. ya, when we put a capfull of oil in the plug chamber it jumped to 210 compression. So its definetly a ring then.. (and i just talked with a friend and he's thinks the same thing)... well i just hope the cyl walls arn't scarred and only need to be honed. =]

thx
